How hard would it be to adjust the location of a camera in a 3d game? There's a dreamcast game that I wish the camera was moved a bit up. It feels like you wouldn't have to change much, but I dunno since I'm a noob, and it seems like it'd be harder to find the relevant instructions than something like texture data

you grab some off-the-shelf audio engine and shove it into your project and use its tooling to encode your music, or you write your own engine/tools, or you implement each song as its own little self-contained assembly program

Figure out the game's audio format (usually a stream of commands), then write your own music with it. Doing this will require a good understanding of assembly.

That was common on the C64, but most C64 games only had 1 song in the first place. If your game has 20 different songs then that could be a lot of bloat compared to a proper engine. Of course, ROM size isn't a concern in 2025 so you're free to be as wasteful as you want.

I'd imagine an engine also makes it easier to have both music and sound effects going without having to dedicate a sound channel just to sound effects.

You need an emulator with a debugger and Cheat Engine. Make a savestate first. Find where the camera coordinates are in the emulated console's memory using CE, convert the CE/PC/emu address to console's address, set a breakpoint on that address in the emu's debugger and see which part of the game's code accesses it there. Then you either change how the game writes it, or what the game does after it's read it.

That's the part I'm confused on what you'd do. I can't search for a specific value cause I dunno what the coordinates are. Do I just look through all the values that update between frames or something?

There should be a part where you search for "unknown initial value", and then later pick "changed value" or "unchanged value"

With frame advance, you can
>search the initial unknown value
>advance to a specific position
>let the game run to clear noise
>advance but do the opposite inputs to return to how you fist had it
>search unchanged value
and that reduced the list by a lot

Ah. I misunderstood. I thought you were doing a ROM hack.

I'm not really that familiar with existing sound drivers since I chose to roll my own, but there's several options out there:
https://github.com/SuperDisk/hUGEDriver (used by GB Studio)
https://github.com/DevEd2/DevSoundX (latest incarnation of "DevSound")
https://www.gamebrew.org/wiki/Carillon_Player_GB (has its own tracker that runs on the Game Boy itself)

Of course, the best (and worst) sound driver is the one you make yourself. But I may be a little biased on that one.

Sorry for another question, but for converting the CE address to the console address, is it as simple as finding where the emulated memory starts and subtracting that from the address I'm looking at? My worry is that the emulator might not store the emulated memory in a single contiguous block. I'm poking through flycast's code and it looks like it uses just one block, but I dunno much about emulator design

If not, use emulator's memory editor to write easy to find values in different memory areas, then find which of these values is the closest to the coordinates in CE and count the difference from there.

Why target 3 radically different platforms like that? Modern engines might have one-click export for Playstation and Xbox or whatever, but these have different resolution and palette and processor speed and sound capabilities. Has tooling really gotten good enough to crunch a song into the YM2612 and the SPC700 and have it come out sounding okay both times? Back in the day each platform typically had its own dev team

It can definitely help already. I've used chatgpt to help me figure out modified rle and lz77 algorithms. As for the game, I would love to see ffvii on PS1 to be able to easily change the number of party members and switching out lead members as the model in game. Also I want to mod the Chocobo racing mechanics and levels and add tons of breeding mechanics. Like Chocobo pokemon edition. They can be used in battle, their AI battle behavior can be changed to give different styles of Chocobo. Id also love to really change the stats of all the characters to make more common jrpg play styles more playable. Like perhaps a kingdom hearts style choice where you choose whether cloud is a warrior, mage, thief, etc.... basically have the other characters set classes, but you get to choose clouds. That makes picking your team more strategic and gives other characters a better reason to be used. This would also include raising enemy levels and stats based on what disc you're on, so end game grinding doesn't have to be extremely tedious. Id also love to extend or add courses for the snowboarding, submarine and motorbike minigames. That'd be dope.

anon assembly is a hard language to work with especially within the NES's hardware limits, and you'd be better off making a game with a more newer language and using an engine with good documentation. it'll give you far less headaches than trying to work with hardware from over 40 years ago.
and i get that you want to make things on the NES specifically, hell i'm not even saying there's no merit in it, but if you're having this bad of a time with it why not give something else a try when you have all the tools for it?

Is that you, MisterShu?

Anyway, I think the best place to start is questioning what you want to make first. Don't jump into anything before knowing what you want to do.

This is what motivated me to learn ASM for consoles I wanted to do hacks/mods for. I always visualized the end goal first (i.e. how can I add an enemy to this game), then I'd ask myself what do I need to learn to get there. Little by little.

If you need brushing up on your ASM skills, like I said in the past, it may be best to start small. If you remember my advice from a few years ago, the best starting point for this would be to do small ASM hacks with a strong hacking community like SMW. Or if you want to stick to NES, you can give SMB3 a try, and I can help you. Remember "patch.asm"? It didn't do anything with the single RTS. That's the patch where you can experiment and put in whatever you want in there. I guess the hard part is knowing what you want to happen every frame.

I can direct/teach you to some things even if it's making a homebrew from scratch, but only if you know what you want to do. And I know that you do good art as well, so it would be stupid of me to pass up on.

>reading books
I do agree that some of these people aren't very helpful, but I will suggest digging through LibGen to pirate programming books. Assembly is generally harder to comprehend than C or Python, and many games up to the PlayStation were written in C/C++. Another way to get started is by making hacks while reading disassemblies or decompilations alongside a book that you can comprehend. The Assembly types may also be a barrier as you might find it easier to understand Genesis or Game Boy Assembly better than the NES.

I sort of do. I look at SmileBASIC for Nintendo Switch/3DS/DSi and tried coding, and I tried GameMaker Studio 2 which I have the most comfortable spot there, yet tutorials keeps fucking me up with how to implement variables by either column or by coding, and they often go with the latter. I spoilered it because it's not retro. [GameMaker Studio 2 is?]

I can't respond yes without OC art atm
>what you want to make first
A sandbox toy, at least to know what each by each code does, like walking up, down, left, right, pushing blocks, collecting items, and such , all in a small room. Another start is making animated art like that one Megaman.nes demo I seen.
>the best starting point for this would be to do small ASM hacks with a strong hacking community like SMW
I confess my stupid laziness and mental problems made me less encouraged to try SMW romhacking because I need to find many tools to get straight to the point.

Also, of course nobody's out here memorizing addresses for every individual game. Pretty much any assembly language lets you define labels, i.e. a key word to describe how you're using that specific piece of memory. It's pretty much the same as what variables are in higher level languages, just without niceties like type checking, scope, etc

NTA but I think he's saying that generally all pixel stuff in modern games that can be ported, should be ported. Modern games, like Hollow Knight are quite bloated for 2D games and if the work was worth it, or if AI sped up the process it would be popular. Everyone loves a port on small underpowered emulators, a lot of us would appreciate smaller MD/GBA sized files. And the amazing workarounds AI finds to creatively get round interpreting visual/audio limitations could be like playing a completely new game. I think there's a lot of potential indies that would qualify.

You are dealing with a lot of limitation on movement frames, screen size, audio, button inputs etc. If it was like some modern games, would you get round less inputs with combined button macros? I mean they would likely be used exclusively on emulators to avoid issues I presume. So using for example, 'Up+B+select' to make a new action mapped to the other button on the controller used on PC/handheld. Would this be workable as a separate action/button? Gameboy only has 4 and a dpad, discounting the on/off and wheels

I have about 30 "Player States" set up and there's no wacky button combos to pull them off. Though I can see how cycling through weapons with select could get annoying.
Working with the limitations is what's been fun. Trying to squeeze as much as I can out of the hardware without frame drops is challenging, but part of the journey is figuring out how to to pull it off and apply that knowledge to future code.
For example, we have a small screen and there's nothing we can change about the size. So I redid the camera system to kind of lead the player towards where they're going based on their velocity, giving the player more of an opportunity to react, rather than just clipping him to center like most GB Studio games do.

I don't expect you're going to get an answer because of how he's been acting, but I can give you my perspective as someone else who doesn't like the Plaza, but can at least live with it.
So, some have a grudge against the Plaza because it harbored staff that actively encouraged and participated the DDOSing of RHDN in the months leading to the shutdown. I don't even remember at this point if they were also part of the discord cabal that tried to seize control of RHDN or not, but it was a plain shitty thing to be doing anyway to the biggest romhacking site and community on the net.
This staff were also the first to swoop in and recommend their competing site which became the Plaza after the shutdown, and the way they did so felt really scummy.
So that's my issue. Maybe it doesn't line up with Anon's, maybe it does, but it should shed a LITTLE light, hopefully.

I'm pretty sure most people hate the site due of Kando (RomHackPlaza's manager and author of many SNES FastROM hacks) and some previous drama he had with RHDN. From what I remember:
>Around late 2023, Kando and his friends were very pissed at the current state of RHDN (game descriptions getting removed, hacks not getting accepted due to RHDN's strict guidelines, staff not informing users about some of the site's problems, staff refusing to accept more people (like Kando) to help with the site).
>Brette, one of Kando's friends, decided to run an autoclicker on his RHDN's hack page to redownload it over and over just for fun, resulting in his hack getting over 30,000+ redownloads.
>Sometime after, RHDN started suffering from slowdowns and eventually went down for some time. After they went back up, they ended up disabling downloads temporarily due to bandwidth problems.
>Sometime after the incident, Spike (CDRomance's creator) created Romhacks.org (later renamed "Romhack Plaza"), with Kando and Brette as the site's main admins.
>And then, people started circulating those Discord screenshots where Brette admitted to using an autoclicker and Kando being fully aware of it. This led to people accusing Kando and Brette of trying to take down RHDN.
>Despite all of this, however, both Kando and the RHDN staff claim that the site's bandwith problems weren't caused by Brette's autoclicker thing, but due to other unrelated drama regarding RHDN and homebrews.
>Kando also claims that, while Brette did indeed redownload his hack over 30,000+ times, the patch itself was only 8 KB.

As for RomHack Plaza, I personally don't have too many issues with the site. Something I like is that, after getting verified, you wont't have to wait for the mods to approve your hacks. As >>11884304 mentioned, however, this does result in some poor hack quality control.

Surprisingly, no. Game Maker is very capable and you can program most anything you want in the Game Maker Language. The problem with Game Maker is that most of the official tutorials and resources are very surface level so if you want to make something truly exceptional you have to code it from the ground up yourself. Very few people are able to do this.

This (pic related) was made in 2009 with like Game Maker 8 or something.
