How massive was the launch of Halo 2? What was the experience like back then? And what made it so special that it attracted more attention from normies than major blockbuster movies?
Never heard of Halo in my life until I got on 4chan years later.

>>11863686 (OP) Huge marketing campaign, pretty much every store you went in that had video games had something relating to Halo. Banner, master chief cut out, some stores had pre order incentives like a collectors edition case. There was a ton of hype around the trailers because they made the game look like it was going to be much cooler than it was. So I guess it was a big deal but that's because there was a ton of money put into making it a big deal.

>>11863686 (OP) It was pretty big, I will always remember kids skipping school to play it on launch day. I wouldn't compare it to blockbuster movies though, games weren't that big yet.
wasn't that big at all. I bought it, beat it and traded it in for something else the actually big launches of that era were GTA VC and SA. that was real shit. also gaylo is only popular in USA, whereas GTA is popular globally
>>11863686 (OP) Most titles back in those days went one or two sequels before dying off. Halo was special because it was a bonding experience between kids as the first real split screen experience that took place on open field with a diversity of different weapons and vehicles. what made the hype massive was the microsoft title and then the expectations for the stock price at the time. it was massive because there was a multi year gap between Halo and halo2 I was 16 years old and people took off work for it in both professional settings and in academic settings it was a huge networking and onramp for Xbox live which was shilled as an updates only platform until halo2 came out I played the demo for the first halo and eventually played halo at my friends houses for months straight and when halo 2 came out the landscape had modernized and people were more networked together, short form videos were becoming a thing back then when MMS started supporting 15 second video clips so the virality of the game and platform was amazing. then the 360 came out, halo 3 capitalized on the hype and technological prowess of the system was better integrated..... essentially peak 00s aesthetic

I was playing PC games at the time, and when I was into consoles I mainly knew Nintendo. I did not notice the Halo 2 launch. I did once play one of the Halo games (no idea which one) in a local multiplayer session on somebody else's Xbox. It seemed okay I guess.
