Three questions for you all:
-If you had to choose 3 puzzle games to take to your grave, what would they be and why?

-What truly makes a puzzle good or bad?

-In your opinion, what makes games like Tetris so popular?

I'm still looking for some, but after recently playing through both Mario Picross games I'd definitely choose those as 2 of my options. I love these. Perfect little games.

>If you had to choose 3 puzzle games to take to your grave, what would they be and why?
-Ghost Trick (NDS)
-Pipe Mania (C64)
-Klax (NES)
>What truly makes a puzzle good or bad?
I'd say the core of a good puzzle is it's ability to engage players. If a puzzle is too doesn't teach mechanics, is hard to understand, or can't properly interest players in completing it's challenge it become too frustrating.
>In your opinion, what makes games like Tetris so popular?
I'd say, it's numbing simplicity and competitive aspect. Along with being at the right place at the right time with the GameBoy.

Tetris can never be topped because it is an action puzzle game with simplicity and a high skill ceiling. To not be like Tetris you have to add in another layer of complexity, but that becomes more of a barrier to entry in an action puzzle game. That isn't to say there aren't people that enjoy games like Puyo Puyo or Columns, but those require a bit more planning with the board over Tetris. The only one that really got close to Tetris is Lumines with its two colors and just making block formations to clear. Still slightly more complex than Tetris, but doesn't have the planning of the games that use significantly more colors to clear.

I think the most exhausting puzzle games are sokoban ones. To up the challenge of puzzles you make very repetitive motions to solve them. Such as moving a box a few spaces back and forth to let other boxes in. Sure it makes you have to think many steps ahead, but not many people really care to repeat that process four more times.

If I were to pick three puzzle games, it'd probably be Tetris, Lumines, and Puzzle Quest.

>Lumines
I'm wondering why falling block games have such a broad range appeal over matching game or maze type puzzle structures...
Perhaps it's the falling block time limit that puts pressure on players decisions. While other puzzles like sudoku are much less action oriented.

Why do you consider it fun? Is there a specific concept that really does it for you?
