>drops one of the hypest fighting games of its era
>disappears

Why'd they do it?

I love this game, but the gameplay itself is not fluid. 2 really improved on this, but the addition of the weird human/god characters ruins the theme.

I hate to say this... but it really needs an extended remaster.

Not to tell you your business, but I'm not sure I agree. I mean, you showed me that arcade cab, and from what I saw...and this is just my humble opinion. From what I saw on that screen...hype? Not so much.

I mean, there was no balance, no real depth in that gameplay. So to my eye, all this "hype" looks like nothing more than simple rote copying. Probably of some other fighting game. Believe me, I've played enough fighters to know.

Ah...this "hype" of yours...maybe...the real gem is still out there?

It's still pretty amazing that it was one of the earliest fighting games to have a built-in combo system, before even Killer Instinct.

>I mean, there was no balance, no real depth in that gameplay.
It wasn't unbalanced. And it was pretty deep, despite the nature of its gimmicky overall appearance. Had tech traps, air juggles, dizzy meter, combo chains, with each character having their unique playstyle, and had buffering and canceling with its hold-input mechanics.

You're simply too scrub to get it.

>Midway bought out the devs and then forced them to rush it out
how extremely lame. not familiar with Primal Rage but it does look pretty ludo; not all games have to be super deep or whatever, sometime it's nice to have retarded fun
surprised no indie devs have tried to recreate these kinda games like Killer Instinct, Primal Rage or MK. they'd probably have to use 3D models instead of real-life people or stopmotion though

I appreciate that they were trying to do something different, but yes the special move system is very awkward. Maybe that was the intent, to limit their usage and separate them from traditional combos. Apparently there's a later revision which changes special inputs to match more traditional fighting game styles.
Anonymous No.11864271 [Report]

The only thing they did different was having you hold 2 inputs while you put in the directionals.
Anonymous No.11864523 [Report] >>11864567
>>11864263
All things considered, this was still pretty early in the genre, like the second wave of games post SFII. They didn't really know what would stick and what wouldn't, so devs tried to get different hoping to find the next big thing and not be a total clone

the japanese release changed the input to be SF-like, but i wouldn't call it better. The whole point is thight excecution, you know, what MK/KI were doing.

What the fuck are you all talking about? The special moves are easier to pull off and do not have as tight of execution specifically because they are hold to execute. You just throw in the directionals and they come out.

Fighting games are a hit or miss, you will never get used to subpar controls no matter how it looks the hits have to be inmediate or delay on purpose all moves sort of delay simply breaks the gameplay, why animation done correctly struggles against one frame hadoukens
Anonymous No.11864643 [Report]
>>11864567
I know how they work, I was saying why it's different. I don't think they're easier though, but I learned to play with SFII and MK so, it just felt unnatural to me to hold action buttons then put in direction inputs

The protection for the game is undefeated. Falling through the floor randomly, blood color glitches, etc. Even official releases of the arcade version have these issues. The only way to accurately play the game is to play on a real arcade board.

Was Primal Rage actually fun?
I had the Genesis port back then and I found it boring gameplay-wise. Not even on the same level as MK, and much worse than KI (which I think, at the time, was the only actually good western developed fighting game)

PR was incredible, but all it's ports are terrible, even the PSX one. The only decent was the saturn one, but still doesn't do it justice, unleas you had access to an arcade you were simply missing out.

Apparently the characters that people picked the most were Blizzard and Chaos which made the devs believe that the dinosaurs weren't popular. It's why they decided to go with avatars in the sequel.

That's what the game designer Chris Tang said in his Primal Rage 2 post mortem. Less humanoid characters weren't popular because players preferred characters that could hit with their arms and legs than bites and tail swipes.

I enjoyed PR, replay it every now and then on emulator. Maybe it was for the better they didnt go with PR2, I didnt like the whole giant human version of the dinosaurs gimmick they were planning to go with but I loved the first one. Unrelated but I also liked Weaponlord, not sure how combining the two could have or would have even worked but, that crossed my mind for some reason.

I was always puzzled by Blizzard though, of all the 'elemental' allingments we got(Diablo/fire, Chaos/physical-gases-bodily excretions..if thats even an element kek,Vertigo/poison, Sauron/radioactivity?) I just never could imagine how Blizzard produces cold. Something like an endothermic chemical reaction going on in his gut or something? It was my favorite one of the apes, then Armadon, Vertigo and Talon.

Primal Rage came out too late (in consoles at least) when the fighting genre was already oversaturated and dying. It had decent success but by the time a sequel would've come out is when all the big name fighting games were already struggling to be relevant. Had it come out a year or two before we could've had another sequel. People forget how quickly the fighting genre died.

If I recall correctly there's an interview from a few years back in which they said that they saw that the most played character on all the cabinets was the monkey and came to the conclusion that people preferred humanoid characters over the dinosaurs.
