TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE
After the 4th Badge: First Single Elimination Tournament
After the 8th Badge: Second Single Elimination Tournament
HOW WILL THAT WORK?
Parsec allows two players to individually batlle and then post results. I will host a parsec session myself after both players give me their saves.
Battles will be conducted on Pokemon Stadium.
If your opponent doesn't show, after one rescheduling, it's counted as a loss for them, a win for you.
Showdown is the fallback if nothing else is doable.
BATTLE RULES
Level 50 All
Clauses: Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, No Double Team
WHAT NEXT?
After 1 week, we'll set our sights on Surge. If anyone gets left behind, that's juat how it is. You'll need to catch up - Pokemon isn't too tough, and can be beat in a day or two.
If all players agree to advance to the next badge, we'll so so.
ANYTHING ELSE?
Have fun. Challenges will be posted shortly. Don't be afraid to post pictures. Yell at me if you want any of this to change. Hide the thread if you don't care. Suggest challenges!
If it was me I'd use a gen 2 transfer to give my mons moves they can't normally learn in gen 1

For people on original hardware, if you want to rip your save and have an N64 flash cart you can also use the GB64 emulator to rip the files. https://lambertjamesd.github.io/gb64/romwrapper/romwrapper.html

>>11865307I'm not the one avoiding gameplay
>>11865335to grind is to avoid gameplay. grinding replaces actual gameplay and strategic engagement with the game with playtime padding to have big enough numbers to disengage with everything.
>>11865351ok, and people playing the game with less experience accumulated than you aren't "avoiding gameplay", if anything they're actively seeking out more meaningful gameplay by doing so instead of just overleveling.
Neat Idea OP, although I don't care to use Parsec.
People should mention what version they're playing so we can get some balance between Red/Blue and I guess Yellow if anyone cares to play it.
>>11865298>exp barIs this a romhack? I swear Gen 1 didn't have that.
>>11865483it is blue with an exp bar, was the only rom i had on hand
>>11865162I guess thats subjective. For me, grinding is going OUT of your way to level up, i.e., repeatedly battling wild pokemons with the explicit goal of leveling up.
The adversary trainers are usually on the routes to your next mandatory goals anyway, why not fight them? Battling is the core aspect of the game after all.
Other than that, its my experience that the larger your team is, the scarcer the experience from trainers become, specially if you try to use all your pokemon equally. Iirc last time I played FireRed I used a team of 5 pokemon trying to keep the levels evenly distributed and only levelling through trainer fights and I still arrived at the E4 with an underleveled team after battling every trainer I found.
So either you dont remember correctly or youre just shitposting to derail the thread.
Btw, this is me going into Mt. Moon. Im not a big fan of early game available Pokemon, so I only caught a Pidgey for Sand Attack and thinking it would give me an easier time against Bug Catchers, because of Gust. But, apparently Gust is a normal type move. Ill see if I catch something new in Mt. Moon though.
I found my red/blue/yellow cartridges recently
I know it's been almost a decade since the save batteries started dying, but as long as the chance to copy my original save is non zero and not that expensive, I want to try it.
What do you I use to dump my cartridge save? Is there anything special I need to do to prevent losing a battery that's barely hanging on by a miracle?

Just beat up Brock. My star, Cuterfree, bent his brain in two. Barely took a scratch.
...The grind to get there was pretty bad, even on 3x speed. I like to grind in this little area because I always find Mt. Moon a little tricky without too many Pokemon to back me up.
>>11866392I plan on picking done...and if my interpretation of the OP is correct, the method we use for trading is up to us
>>11865541>battling is the core aspectOne of three. Battling, hunting/collecting, and exploring.
If you've played the game and know where everything is, this makes replays a totally different experience than the intended. This is why every town/area, I wander in grass or caves water etc for like ten-twenty minutes doing wild battles. It's not organic, but it properly emulates the way you played the first time you played the game when you still were looking for Pokemon locations, items, where to go etc, this results in proper level ups every time
>>11866714This. All the anons bragging about being underlevelled are effectively just saying that they're not playing the game; avoiding battles, not exploring, not trying to catch mons. Just trying to race to the end instead of enjoying what the game has to offer. Embarrassing
>>11865904If your saves are still there, transfer your mons to Stadium asap, then replace the cart batteries
>>11865939>>11865980It's a good option if you already have a flashcart, otherwise getting a Joey Jr. or GBxCart RW to dump directly from your carts is the best option
>>11866017>sand-attack is quite valuableI don't know why accuracy debuffs are so widely considered wasted slots. I always have at least one Flash user on my team by the end, because it's just so valuable.
>>11866812you mean people who want to be challenged instead of just bruteforcing everything with grinded out numbers?
>>118668241 stage of accuracy is even better in gen 1 because it's -33% instead of -25% hit rate
>>11866852I don't grind, I just actually enjoy playing video games
>>11866824I definitely agree with you that they're underrated. Double Team is especially awesome in terms of utility, especially in terms of player versus player battles. Sand Attack/Flash might force a switch from your opponent, but your opponent can't do anything about Double Team if they can't hit you. Which is why it's widely banned, even in OP's tourney...
You can really do just about anything you like in NPC battles. Enemy trainers use the attack your Pokemon is weak to over all others - meaning, if your Pokemon is weak to Psychic, and the enemy only knows Barrier, it'll spam Barrier infinitely.

>>11866961i don't use retroarch but whatever setting you have to flip to run the game in "super game boy" mode is what'll give you that

>>11867021It doesn't feel right going out of my way to avoid battling trainers, or to avoid catching mons. I don't like racing through games, certainly not RPGs
>>11867073mid 30s is where you end up without avoiding trainers in gen 2, and the same goes for below 50 in 1
>>11866017Sorry bro, didnt want to come across as an asshole. Thats. a nice feat, I dont think Im knowledgeable enough to beat E4 with such a low level team.
Pic related is my team after beating Misty. I captured Bellsprout specifically for this fight because I figured Wartortle, Pidgeotto and Geodude wouldnt make it.
And ye, Bellsprout carried with minimum Sleep Powder + Growth setup for Vine Whip. Does Growth even affect Vine Whip? I never know if grass type attacks are Special or Attack stat related.
I think Ill catch a Spearow next, from what Ive seen Pidgeotto is not going to bring much to the table. Fearow at least learns Drill Peck, a proper Flying move, later on.
After that Ill wait for OP to update the next step in the run.
>>11867104no offense taken. grass is special, so it will be boosted by growth and growth in this generation has the benefit of essentially being like gen 3's calm mind (boosts both special attack and defense) so it would be great on victreebel... if razor leaf being a guaranteed crit didn't render it unaffected by stat boosting effects. it sadly won't be very useful to you long term as a result, unless you forgo waiting for razor leaf at all.
>>11867086Sorry, I just don't believe you, unless you otherwise explicitly try to get through routes in the quickest way possible and avoid random encounters, don't try to catch mons, and don't worry about finding items. I never grind in Pokemon and my teams whenever I play through gens 1/2 are 40+/50+ by the time I beat the champion
>>11867104How I remember Physical / Special types in Gen 1-3 is that special types are the all the eeveelutions + dragon
>>11867125one of these days i'll have to record them in full so i can put them on youtube since i can't just post a wall of hall of fame collages and ask you to trust that i am, but it's important to remember that catching pokemon doesn't give out experience until later on in the series so that wouldn't make much of a difference.
>>11867134>catching pokemon doesn't give out experience until later on in the seriesI didn't know that and that wouldn't even be what I mean. If you care about completing the pokedex/catching available mons in new routes, then you're going to encounter mons you've already caught, beat them, and get exp. If you always avoid or run from random battles then I see how that would have an impact, but I neither grind nor avoid battles

>>11867932OP here, yes you can! There are a multitude of different ways to trade.
The very easiest way is uploading both of your save files, and then I can reupload with the traded Pokemon in each respective game.
Second easiest is RetroArch netplay using the gpSP core.

Third easiest is port forwarding and IP netplay over VBA-M.

>>11875896>trading with yourself>gen 2This feels like it goes against the spirit of this playthrough, when the point is to collaborate with other players. It's one step away from allowing Stadium gifts.
>>11876886Yeah, the title is called RBY playthrough, not RBY + Gen 2 tradebacks playthrough. It's not appreciating what RBY has to offer
>>11876964Not only that, but not limiting trades to other members of the playthrough means there's no limit to the number of otherwise limited resources (like TMs and static encounters) in circulation.
This not only removes any incentive to trade with other players, but also opens up the potential to steamroll the eventual tournament with a disproportionally stacked team compared to people who didn't receive outside help.
I plan on catching nothing else from now in Virdian till reaching Cerulean City
>>11877027I vote we ban all inside trading. ONLY in-thread trading.

for the sake of whatever mini competition OP has going, however, the obvious reason why you "cannot" skip gyms is obviously so that players with "four badges" are on the same page. an obtuse player could feasibly have full access to the entire world via surf with three badges if they're especially determined to do so, but when OP says "four badges" they mean around the level of having beaten Erika.
>>11877738good luck brah, I just started on RED right now gonna get some coffee and then start catchan' pokemans.
My journey begins with RAT
>>11876886>>11876964>>11877027I wanted to use this opportunity to use late game Pokemon on lower levels during the early game. I was specifically thinking of Marowak and Magnemite, levels 14-16, taken from Gold. The rest of my team is all from the same fresh Blue file. I've already played RBY without any trading so many times, and there's only so much you can do early on with just one copy of the game. But you're making a fair point about collaborating with others. I'll hold off the tradeback for now and see how the thread develops.
Anyways, here's how the team looks at the moment. I looked through my old save files and it seems I partially recreated one of my past teams by accident, whoops! I'll christen them all when I get to Lavender Town.
>>11877847As a follow up I'll share my experience so far and why it took me so long to beat Misty. First of all I just could not find Spearow, it must have taken around 25 encounters. But I finally got one on level 5, perfect for Viridian Forest. After beating the last trainer there, Spearow was at level 9 so I went back for the missable rival fight on Route 22.
Brock was a pushover but then I was worried that I'm going to be too overleveled for Misty, and I needed another team member to spread the experience. I try to avoid grinding in Pokemon, so I skipped most of the trainers to save them for later and went straight to Route 24 to catch a Bellsprout. I had to buy a lot of Potions and be careful not to let any of my team faint, as I couldn't use the Pokemon Center in Cerulean. Then I caught an Abra to teleport before the point of no return and fight all the trainers I skipped using my new Bellsprout and Clefairy. I'm probably not going to use the Abra in fights though.
That took a while ... Spammed Growl and Sand-Attack but all my offensive moves were "Not very effective ... " Still quite easy though. Let's keep going
Gonna play catch-up today as well.
I'm thinking of doing something really silly and obtain my entire team via trainer fly.
Just started on the first cave ... Yeez, the encounter rate is crazy. You take two steps and there's a pokemon.
>>11878048kek is it your first time? mt moon is a little annoying but later on in the game you can buy repels to avoid encounters like that.
>>11878146Nah not my first time I played this game back when it came out.
>>11877847>>11877872I think you should play however you want and just share your experience with the thread, that's what I'm doing. I'm not interested in the tourney, I'm just playing and having fun as a social thing.
>>11877945Decided to go for it and as an extra challenge to catch one before Brock with the death-warp which took way too long to set up because of the fucking 5% encounter rate for Weedle in Blue.
Anyway, gimme dat psychic sprite.

Takin a lil' break just after visiting Bill, here's my current team ... Crush is a Geodude and Sting is a Nidoran. I've found very limited use for Nidoran as of yet but Geodude is absolutely carrying in most fights. I still don't have a good move against Rock-Types, lol. I felt like I had to catch Oddish to counter Misty, Maybe I'll even catch a second one.
>>11877498Thanks I think Brock thought so too
I feel bad that you exist just so I can get rid of you
I forgot about J & J being in Yellow somehow, they werent too bad but it was closer than I would have wanted.
Not long after reaching Cerulean City the 3 Rei's evolved and Rei II & III will be evolving right before Misty, I want to get poison sting on one of them before hand.
I also took a kids Charmander because he sucks. I probably wont be grabbing the other starters as I wouldnt really use them.
>>11878846I dread that JJ battle since I'm typically near death at the end of mt moon. Just entered it in this playthrough so we'll see how it goes
>>11879005Thankfully the game is pretty generous with potions, hope youve got some before you reach them
Heck yeah, My Level 14 Pikachu got KO'd by Starmie (I think it was Water Beam or something?) but Oddish bros pulled through (caught 2 Oddish before Misty just to be on the safe side). On we go ...
I refought Misty 3 times because she crit me 4 times the first try and 5 times the second. Guess Im done for now.
>>11879014just made it through, all good!
Omg I very nearly got wiped out by the male trainer just north of Vermilion City. His Raticate took out my Charmeleon with a critical Hyper Fang, then he Hyper Fang critical'd my Geodude twice in a row, and then his Quick attack crit! 4 criticals in a row. Also my Geodude missed Rock Throw twice in a row (that move does seem to have a high miss chance though). Geodude just barely survived to take out Raticate with the 3rd Rock Throw, crazy bad RNG.
graphic design is my passion
Alright I got hold of a Farfetch'd and the Bike, signing off for now, will continue tomorrow. I like how you get some actual choice of paths after Vermilion, the game has been pretty linear up until now.
Hey everyone, OP here. The first week is almost coming to an end. I'm very happy with how everything has progressed, and I hope everyone is having fun.
Here's a little graphic representing everyone in the thread so far. I think I have everyone's game correct, and I don't think I've missed anyone, but please let me know if anything here is wrong.
Tomorrow we move on to Surge and Erika! So much of the game opens up from that point, and the level cap rises all the way to 50.
After the second week concludes, I'll hold a signup for the tournament and figure out the logistics with everyone who will participate regarding how it will work, seed, and play out. Ideally, I'd love to have a recording of each battle.

>>11879494Oof here, that looks great! Looking forward to progress more in the game tomorrow, already got many ideas, hehe.

About the challenges, I'm having a tough time thinking of a way to reward players that doesn't feel unfair to the people who can't upload their saves for little rewards. Is the challenge itself enough incentive to do them, or is a reward required?
>>11879543Thanks! Although I do hope to fill the gaps eg. trainer sprites eventually.

Yup, after badge 4, signups for the tournament will start. We'll take maybe a day or two to gauge interest and figure out logistics, and seed and hold the actual tournament. This'll also give any anons a chance to start a new game or catch up before we continue on to Sabrina and Koga.
>>11880517Shoot, you're right! I'll make sure to add that. No need to apologize, my friend.
>>11880549Roger that, corrected. Thank you!
Also, here are some challenges I've cooked up for everyone that'll last for anyone playing from Misty to Erika. You get a nice little badge on the sheet depending on how many challenges you beat. I'll make new ones once we pass Erika. Maybe there can be special badges too, like one you get for trading, or battling in the tournament.
If there's a challenge that no one likes on here, or if someone has a better one, just yell at me and I can cook something up. Thank you all for waiting on these.
Also, not to double post, but we officially go to Surge and Erika starting NOWWWWW!
>>11880546I could part with my Wartortle for a decent enough offer.

>>11880658You picking the Psychic trainer sprite makes so much sense with how much you are bending the game to your will. I dig it

Them all being level 7 is gonna force me to grind some though.
>>1188065740 seems really high for badge 4, but I'm one of those weirdos who considers mid-40s end game.
Almost got smoked by Rival encounter on the boat wasn't prepared at all, still it's funny how after all these years I had this gnawing feeling that it would happen right there. Also traded my Nidoran for Nidorino, I like how the traded mon's get boosted EXP.
*Nidorino for Nidorina, I meant to say, of course. And I taught Body Slam to Geodude, not sure if that was smart but it seems to work.
>>1188065740 does seem high for this point in the game, we'd pretty much have to use just our current teams against every trainer that's become available to reach that threshold. And then there would be little opportunities to train any new additions to the team and we'd have to resort to grinding. I think a cap at level 35 and an exception for starters/Pidgeot at 36 would be a good idea, and then the next week increase the cap to 50.

A smart person would've taken advantage of the early Flute and immediately added two level 30 Snorlaxes to their team.

I guess this also qualifies for the "major battle with only one pokemon/damaging move" challenges, since Marcel's only attacking move is Psychic. But I'm assuming you can only earn each challenge once.

All ground type team for one of the challenge goals to fight surge, I will also be going for no damage and gym battle in 6 turns or less as he is probably going to be the easiest to do so against.
Alright, Surge was way easier than I thought. My 17 Mankey was even able to solo his Pikachu, despite getting paralyzed. Crush is definitely my fav, teaching him Body Slam was great. I'll probably replace Gloom at some point in the future but for now he's incredibly valuable against water-types, carried me against the Sailors on the ship.

So this is the team after Surge. When I got to Vermillion I was seriously considering replacing Geodude with a Digglet. But, I decided against it, judging the only upside of using Digglet would be the speed. So, I gave in and taught Geodude Dig, which is ridiculous for the Vermillion gym. Geodude evolved into Graveler and one-shot everything in there, lmao.
Other stuff that happened

Not gonna lie, revisiting these games after not having played them for a long time and with more knowledge about mechanics I'm starting to kinda hate gen 1. Doubt I'll ever touch them again after this playthrough.
>>11882861mfw i have to think about my actions
>>11882879That's just one example. The utter mess that is critical attacks is another, or psychic type weaknesses, or movesets of like three quarters of the Pokemon being utter dogshit.
The more I play the more I notice these annoyances that later games adressed.
Carried by Mr. Mime again, he took out Kangaskhan in 2 hits. Off to the ghost tower I go ... Also I lost every single coin gambling.
>>11882885Adding to your list of annoyances:
>Wrap is a bullshit move that will simply not let you do anything for an infinite number of rounds>limited inventory space and every type of item is thrown in the same place
Are any of the Yellow Version players willing to part with their Cubone? I never used it and it's one of the Pokemon that had a slight moveset makeover. I'm playing Blue.
>>11883128I like the inventory management in gen 1 tbhfam
>>11883136I don't have one yet but I'll keep in mind
>>11870614I'd rather play it how it actually looked on a GameBoy model
>>11883191yeah i would go as far as to say generation 1 is the only pokemon game with a good inventory system. at best a key items pocket for strictly non-functioning tokens (keys, ss ticket) could be all right, but by gen 3 the inventory is forever raped beyond repair by the berry pocket..every generation after 1 completely trivializes item management and it's a damn shame.
>>11882885these three things all either don't matter (psychic, movesets) or are strict improvements on later generations (crits). there are entire pokemon who got fucked by them ruining how crits work in gen 2 and never recovered.

>Tangela knows Bind and not Wrap

>Graveler Rock/Ground>Fearow Flying>Drowzee Psychic>Weepinbell Grass/Poison>Voltorb Electric>Wartortle WaterAnd they all got STAB moves. I think Im only missing a fighting type move to handle Normal types more easily.
Also are there no items on the floor in the Rock Tunnel? I went through the whole thing without seeing a single item.
>TRAINER TIPS: Use SELECT to switch items in the item window!
Wow that's actually super useful. All these years and I never knew.
Also I just got the "Itemfinder" ... Just great. Now I'm going to have to obsessively spam it on every screen.
>>11883695That's really clever Anon. I've nowhere near that level of Pokemon knowledge.
>>11883716Cool team Anon. What are "STAB moves"?
My current team. Raze is a Haunter I caught in the ghost tower, I like his moveset, Confuse Ray seems to work against most enemy types. Cubone is just a lil' badass, I like him. I still haven't got a Water type ... Going to need that for Surf later on.
>>11883591yes, crits ignoring stat modifiers goes both ways retard
>>11883761Krabby is my fav.
>>11883876no, it's working exactly as intended, not "broken" or a "glitch". people should do some actual research or maybe think for themselves instead of downloading their opinions from shitty infographics calling anything that isn't like a later gen a "glitch" or "broken" for reddit updoots.
Surge was no sweat. Got a Mew in Cerulean, may use as HM machine; haven't decided yet. This is the first time I've managed to post a Trainer ID.

>>11883205SGB is a Gameboy model, poorboy
>>11883761If a move's type matching that of the pokemon uses it, it will be 50% stronger. This is called the Same Type Attack Bonus.
>>11883931>crits doing less damage than non-crits is intentionaluh huh
>>11884874It's a balance decision, and one that works very well.
Speedy monsters who specialize in crits are frail, but can deal high damage from turn 1 and can switch in to hit through defense buffs. While slower monsters tend to be sturdy and can last long enough to set up attack buffs, which will eventually outclass crits in raw damage output.
Even with Focus Energy being bugged as it is, crits working the way they do allows certain monsters to shine.
>>11884964>Even with Focus Energy being bugged as it isuh, that's intentional actually
>>11884967>falseflaggingCowardly redditor behavior.
>>11884974No, it's actually intentional. It's supposed to be used on a fast Pokemon that used a bunch of attack/enemy defense modifiers. Lowering the crit chance prevents the now less damaging crits from fucking you over.
>>11884982That's not true, Stadium even addresses that.
You can argue that accounting for the quirk has its uses, and that's certainly true, but it's one of the few things you can definitively say was not intentional.
>>11885059>Stadium even addresses thatAnd gen 2 adresses crits ignoring stat modifiers.
>>11885063Gen 2 completely changed how crits work altogether
>>11885064Stadium completely changed how Focus Energy works altogether
Wow that's nice I was just wondering how to get Cubone to evolve, lol.
>>11885085Different anon, focus energy is clearly bugged, no reasonable person would dispute that
4th Badge done, that wasn't so tough. I brought out my Marowak and Graveler mostly for fun, felt like I was abusing them though since they went down in 1 hit to her Vileplume using Mega Drain. Against my Gloom though she just kept spamming Poison Powder while I used Cut to whittle her down.
What was the level cap again? My highest 'mons are level 30 right now, can I keep levelling? I sort of want to visit the Safari Zone today.
>>11884982redditor or not at least you stopped pretending to use my non-capitalization
>>11885063Gen 2 was a different game, and its battle system is completely incompatible with Gen 1.
>>11885085No, it moved a decimal point. The calculation is the same, but a value was fixed.
This was only possible in Stadium because battles were handled entirely BY Stadium. Had the problem been fixed in Yellow, it would cause desync when linked with Red or Blue.
>>11885115Level cap this week is 36.
>>11885298>Level cap this week is 36.Thanks, that sounds reasonable. I just made my first visit to the Safari Zone, today's mission is to try and get something good out of there ...
>>11884213>SGB is a Gameboy model>a SNES peripheral adapter cartridge is a GameBoy modelamerica-level retardation on display
>>11885401The Super Game Boy actually consists of the same hardware as the original handheld; inside the cartridge is a separate CPU that processes the games while the Super NES only provided means for user-input, output of graphics to the screen, and the additional coloring.
>>11885413That's pretty cool, I didn't know that. I like that thing where a console will also play the corresponding hand-held games ... Peripherals are nice but even cooler if it plays them without any add-ons.
>>11885427If you liked that little tidbit, you'll love this. Super Game Boy 2. Badass little piece was released only in Japan. It had a link port, a red power LED indicator, and it runs at the exact speed of the Game Boy. The original model runs 2.4% faster than a Game Boy. Eight new default borders, too. You can use a code to get the originals back, though.
I still really want one. A bit tough to come by now.

I said goodbye to the SS Anne...right bitch of a mini dungeon, honestly. Does anyone clear it without retreating to a Pokemon Center at least once? I always forget who's waiting with what there.
After that, I taught Brownie Dig, which coincidentally is at its most powerful in Gen 1! 100 base damage. Thunder, for comparison, has 120. I got screwed out of the no damage, but...
>Defeat a Gym Battle in 6 turns or less.
>Win a majpr Trainer battle with only one Pokemon without using items.
>Win a major Trainer battle while only using one damaging move the entire fight.
Not bad for just one fight, I think!
>>11885440That's pretty cool. You know what I like about this one is that you plug it into the top of the console ... I think that's neat, compared to the Gamecube adapter ... You know how that one is like a base, that you have to "sit" the whole Gamecube onto ... I guess it works perfectly fine, but to me that's just not as pretty as plugging an adapter on top. I have a similar feeling for Sonic & Knuckles on the Genesis, I thought that was really clever how you plug the older games on top of the cartridge.

>>11885613Nice! This is everything I've played this file on. First 4 are obvious, last two are CRT with Pokemon Stadium, and then GB Operator on my PC CRT.
>>11885669based, I've used a GB Light, Super GB, and Chromatic thus far.
>>11885672How is the Chromatic, anyway? Been thinking of picking one up, looks like a pretty slick piece of hardware, and I do really like having "one of everything", so to speak...
>>11885678I really like it. If you're a gameboy-fag, the screen is basically god-tier. I had an Analogue Pocket previously, and never actually liked playing it, so I sold it. The Chromatic does a lot "less" overall, but it feels way more like a GB. Also there's an extra "GB Light" palette for monochrome games and I think that's a nice touch.
>>11885697I'm all about Game Boy faggotry. I'm not going to lie, when I saw sunlight readable backlight screen, I thought it was marketing speak, but even through the camera lens, that looks pretty great. Nice color choice, btw.
>>11885706Thx! They aren't lying about the screen, it's the exact right resolution and ludicrously bright, that pic is on brightness "2". Sapphire glass models are still available at Gamestop online in the gray "exclusive" color last I checked, and are $100 cheaper than the new sapphire units for what its worth.
The one I had as a kid was Gameboy Pocket, it was transparent like the second one from the left here
>>11885669I remember having to play with no sound, just to preserve batteries ... And by the way the screen was nowhere near as clear as these ones, the screen was sooo dim you had to squint to see what was going on.
>>11885737Now remember that the Pocket was already miles better than the original, especially when it comes to ghosting.
>>11885738I did not have an OG Gameboy, but I did get to try one back then ... This was probably in late 1999. I remember playing Duck Tales and a Mario game. I sort of liked it though, even if the screen was terrible, I liked the bulky feel of it.
Well that was an unwelcome surprise ... I was totally struggling to catch anything with these worthless Safari balls, and then this guy shows up ... I toss 1 bait and catch him with the 2nd ball.

I'd definitely be willing to trade this guy if anyone has a good offer ...
>>11886810is there a post about what the new caps are? i assume up to badge 4 but what about level cap?
And this is the team after Erika. Vult the Fearow basically cleared the whole gym with Peck. And I used Illu the Drowzee to soften her Victrebell a bit. I havent gone to Lavender Tower yet, is it included for this week?
>>11886891I imagine so since you can do the tower before erika
>>11866243surge defeated. pidgey has once again shown up to hog the spotlight, and despite my initial intentions to retire it, i might keep it around for the long haul. or maybe not. meanwhile, bellsprout demonstrates why wrap was better designed in this gen than any subsequent ones. setting up the damage over time effect and then advancing the turn count with wrap is core to this pokemon's DNA. shame they had to ruin it after this game.
>>11865217did it again during the downtime btw. fought basically every trainer and recorded it start to finish. i can toss it up on youtube at some point
>>11887108>picrelThis is just grotesque, sorry. Great mon choices though
>>11887125game boy color directional palettes are fun, i'm really glad i found the option to force gen 2 to run in DMG mode in bgb so i could see it through this lens too. would you believe corsola can't learn either icy wind or blizzard? sure caught me off guard and in the latter case forced me to reload a save after wasting 110,000P on coins.
>>11885440it always trips me up that super game boy 2 wasn't an upgrade enabling GBC functionality or anything like that. while the link port is useful it feels like such a minor revision otherwise.

>>11887375Incredible that you beat Koga with that team anon. Iirc Koga is one of the hardest gym battles because of how bulky his pokemon are, not to mention the constant poison threat, Muk spamming Minimize, and Weezing with Explosion.

>>11887973minimize muk was responsible for the first attempt failing, so it's definitely koga's strongest pokemon. unfortunately explosion weezing is very unsuited to a boss fight like this, since it (even in the video this happened) often results in the last pokemon 1-for-1ing you in a 4v6 battle and losing as a result. the gym trainers meanwhile use mostly high level psychic type pokemon. given the prevalence of hypno among the gym trainers, i feel like koga's 43 weezing could have been better as a 43 hypno. or gengar if you're really, really hung up on his team being all poison-types. the team is probably more dangerous in yellow where his team is lv44-50 venonat/venomoth and all pack the move psychic.
Damn I really want to use this guy in my team, but just look at those awful stats ... Bottom of the barrel stats, sadly.
>>11888187parasect is at its strongest here, in some part because spore is at its best in this generation, where waking up consumes a turn. if you ever "predict" an enemy pokemon waking up by pre-clicking spore you guarantee a safe re-sleep. leech life (yes even at its current power of 20), dig, and spore is seriously all you need to succeed.
>>11888292Interesting. Yea I noticed that a Pokemon "waking up" consumes a turn, I've been using Sleep Powder on my Gloom because it's insanely strong. Wasn't aware Parasect could learn Dig.
But look at that Speed though, 21 is so bad.
>>11887680Tournament is level 50 all. Level cap is so all participants have equal footing in terms of moves and learnset

>>11888309So a level 36 cap but the Pokรฉmon will be set to 50 by stadium?
>>11888872Stadium doesn't have a way to do that, the tournament organizer would be setting them to 50 manually
>>11888667if you have the cash you can buy it in the game corner instead. it's what i did for pinsir in blue.
