Obviously all the NEET third worlders here are going to be up in arms about a product they will never be able to afford so here is some SID music to alleviate the tension

I don't get it. I remember watching this guy's vid on C64x where he was gushing about the LED lights and animated GUI.
Now this comes out.
So is C64 Ultimate just a regular C64 with LED lights, USB and Wi-Fi?

It's an 'official' (now that the Commodore rights have been bought) C64 using a version of Gideon Zweijtzer's Ultimate 64 mainboard, which is an FPGA implementation. The C64 Ultimate has a classic case version and a transparent case with the LEDs etc

>For a FPGA version of a 40+ year old computer
Why? Just why? You can even get a MiSTer for less than that which does pretty much every computer Commodore ever made
Also, why the C64? Yes yes I know that was the most popular one. but wasn't the C128 100% backwards compatible while also having it's own exclusives and enhancements? I assume whatever FPGA is in that thing is likely more than powerful enough to easily do a C128 and beyond

Hopefully it might get other commodore cores officially or unofficially. C64 is obviously what is in most people’s hearts and to have it in a replica case with working keyboard is pretty cool. It’s one for hardcore Commodore fans more than anything. There are other options for cheaper or free for those not willing to pay this much and that’s all fine and cool

Most people are willing to pay more for better quality, with THE C64 and THE Amiga they think people are not willing to pay extra for composite output.

What would you take out to make it cheaper, worse keyboard or case, arm instead of fpga. I'm sick of shitty low costs systems that cut corners starting with nes mini. The cost is around what I expected maybe slightly more, the Mega 65 is something I would consider vastly overpriced for what you get. This costs around the same as Speccy Next or Commander X16.

I'm saying there's no reason for it to cost this much for what's in it, especially if they now own the rights to Commodore and can basically be their own company. I can see why something like the Commander X16 costs that much since it's all discrete components, but this is just going to be using a FPGA. You don't even need a very powerful one to do C64. No way the keyboard and casing cost that much.

The Ultimate 64 mainboard, which has been around for a while and of which the C64 Ultimate mainboard is based on is the equivilent of 300 dollars so to get that plus a case and quality mechanical keyboard for the same price is pretty much a bargain. I swear people don't understand the cost of things these days.

I think you can count C128 exclusives on two hands.

Which is laughably overpriced considering it's a mostly empty board with a small bit of components and mostly relies on FPGA. And from what I am seeing in the images of it, you need to supply your own damn SID chip?

>plus a case
So bunch of plastic, about as much plastic as a storage tub at a dollar store

>and quality mechanical keyboard
Which you can get for as little as $20 these days

Tell me, what justifies this thing costing 50% more than something like a mister? Pretty sure the FPGA in a mister is even more expensive than the one used in this thing.

>>11868283
My point is any FPGA they could get to use in this thing is likely far more than powerful enough to do even the C128 if not even Amiga systems. I can't imagine there are many FPGAs out there which you can still bulk-order that can handle a C64 but nothing beyond that.

You can supply your own SID (or two if you want dual SID), however you can still use the FPGA-based implementation if you don't have a SID of your own. The difference as I understand it is that a real SID has a true analogue filter which sounds much nicer ('creamier' as the synth nerds would probably say).
