Why does nobody talk about the unique and interesting Hitachi hardware in the Saturn and Dreamcast?

>Saturn had Hitachi SH-2
>Dreamcast had Hitachi SH-4 and only console ever created that supports automatic order independent alpha blending.
>Genesis can't do transparency, Saturn can't do transparency, Dreamcast goes all out on transparency and lighting, supports 8-bit destination alpha blending with 24-bit sourcing 32-bit z-buffer
>Saturn and Dreamcast diffuse+specular lightning based on palette indices
>Dreamcast used tile layered deferred rendering which supported order independent transparency

As cool as this is, and I do think it is cool especially as an answer for all the taunting Sega received for their less than stellar transparency support on Saturn the PlayStation 2 blew it away in this regard. I don't know how SCE managed to understand the concepts behind alpha blending and transparencies in computer graphics but the PS2 is still the king in that area. Dreamcasts' forward thinking rendering tiles and alpha support are commendable and was formative for the future of graphics, but a high that is still unsurpassed for 25 years? The PS2 was a monster here.

But, I feel my tangent is inappropriate for this thread. I love Saturn and Dreamcast. Saturn's 3D look is an acquired taste at times but the simple 3D graphics feels hand assembled in a way more advanced systems are not. Every polygon and texture fought for tooth and nail and pulled off to delight us. As things got better and lighting became more present in games, I feel Saturn's subtractive shading is extremely appealing.

Dreamcast's super high resolution 480p VGA mode is still a sight to behold. It's so sharp, unlike any of its future competitors (except Xbox) the Dreamcast has this ultra sharp look GC and PS2 games do not. Super reminiscent of arcade games with their bold, bright graphics the Dreamcast takes you away into a world for at least half an hour nothing else matters.

I feel like people here talk about it pretty often, and mainly in regards to how it contributed to the Saturn’s failure. The Saturn had 2 SH-2 chips, purportedly because they realized in the middle of development that only 1 wouldn’t be enough to compete with the PlayStation. Having two CPUs made it more difficult to develop for, and as a result, so games that would have been ported to or made for Saturn were developed for PlayStation instead.

The main issue with the Saturn is the GPU is garbage. The dual SH2s are not the issue.

Then why did you post it?

I'm trying an experimental stream of consciousness style of writing, as I pick my nose and wipe it on a thoroughly used paper towel by my desk.

No, the dual CPUs were definitely a problem because they couldn’t use RAM simultaneously.

The meta is to wipe it on your dirty clothes. Then your boogies disappear when mom does the laundry :)

Because the nobody is desperately trying to be a somebody but is unable to talk about anything the somebodies are interested in any meaningful way.
