it's funny how all the best genesis soundtracks don't use GEMS

why was sega pushing sonic's shitty tweety looking animals so hard, wasn't this supposed to be a game with "a mascot with attitude"?

GEMS sounds fine on real hardware. Its just happens that the default instruments that came with GEMS don't play nicely with emulation + YouTube audio compression, which created the myth that GEMS was bad.

>don't play nicely with emulation + YouTube audio compression

This really can't be understated. More people are familiar with how Genesis games sound through emulation (commercial releases or not), and forget how a Genesis or Mega Drive sounded on contemporary TV sets.

This is from 7 years ago, but Nuked OPN2 is an effort to accurately recreate that sound output.

Not sure if this continued on or was brought into the main Genesis Plus GX core, or what, haven't checked.

Japan got spoiled with SMPS 68k/Z80, and Europe had their own sound drivers ranging from Krisalis to Core Design.

Bootlegs seem to love the High Seas Havoc driver for some reason.

The game was actually a sequel to Flicky.

Idk even as a kid I thought lot of Genesis games (I.e. GEMS titles) had this harsh and ugly sound to them. Comix Zone sounds decent though

This, but it defaults to MAME's audio driver because it's faster.

Why didn't the other animals of Flicky carry over to the Sonic universe?

Genesis sound emulation is practically perfect these days with Nuked
The "it sounds completely different on real hardware" cope doesn't work anymore

NTA, but one thing to keep in mind is that YM2612 and YM3438 have subtle differences that affect games like Earthworm Jim.

The YM2612 generally sounds grittier and the YM3438 generally sounds cleaner
The Model 2's shit audio isn't from the YM3438, but from the rest of the audio circuitry. Some people have modded Model 2s to fix the audio and the YM3438 actually sounds amazing

The ym1612 emulation accuracy is not the issue. Emulators typically don't apply the low pass filter the real genesis does. This lack of low pass filter usually does not sound too bad. The important thing is I said Emulation + YouTube. The YouTube part is important, the highly unnatural FM waveforms screw up the lossy audio compression, making it sound like farts. Also, on the subject of lossy audio compression screwing things up, the sonic jump sound effect never sounds right on YouTube.

Fun fact, that sound isn't FM. It instead uses the SN76489. (PSG)

I am aware, both chips produce waveforms that cause issues for YouTube's shitty audio compression.

After this SEGA realized that nobody cared about classic arcade game references and instead wanted "animal babes" like the original characters in American Sonic media. Starting with Sonic Adventure they put in New Amy, Rouge the Bat, etc.
