The original game's combat benefitted from its limited mobility by making you have to consider what the best weapon for the job was. It made each encounter feel almost like a puzzle. In every game after you just spam strafe jump and use whatever. It made combat mindless. Strafing ruined this series.

Please stop spamming this shit, it's both boring and a stupid take. The first game had terribly unfun combat.

Never used the strafe in ratchet 1, just didn't seem useful. Spent any reorienting myself doing somewhat clumsy movements and jumps, wasn't bad and did add to difficulty but never felt entirely right. Sequels definitely had better combat, I think Deadlocked is the best there. Still enjoy R&C 1.

I prefer 1 over 2 not because of the controls and combat changes but just because the level design is better and 2 has some REALLY fucking annoying section like the fucking desert and the ice planet. Also ratchet 1 has a way better last boss

this is the kind of pretend premise you want to believe about a game but it doesn't actually hold up to the minutia of playing.

Not at all. Just played it earlier this year, it was a ton of fun. Combat is a lot more close-quarters, higher risk, weaving in and out of enemy attacks, and each weapon has its own niche and you don't have to upgrade them to be viable. It just plays more like an action game than a shooter.

Wasn't as refined as the sequels but set the groundwork in place for them to be much better. It's a quaint title from a quaint time, when they were still trying a lot of stuff out. The first game is very charming and still has loads of great writing.

Sorry man but strafing is just objectively necessary for a shooter. Some games are still good without it because they're good in other areas, like this one, but that's just the way it is, it's a hard reality of gaming.

Can anyone tell me, why in the FUCK I see around 0.33 Ratchet threads in a year? Isn't it supposed to be a classic game? It's about the only mascot IP that survived through all these years without going to shit. I see so little discussion about it, I still don't know if I should play it, and I think I see more Sly threads nowadays.

Duke Nukem 3D and Wolfenstein 3D were objectively better than their previous games. Hell most people don't even realize that they weren't the first games in their series.

What also fucked with it was moving from Discrete Health to Continuous Health. A hit from a boss or a love tap from an enemy used to take 1 unit of health. You can then replenish 1 unit of health if you can find it. Later in the franchise some things can hurt you more than others and I think it hurt more than it helped. I typically just prefer my Ratchets and my Jaks more as platformers but the world was in the process of a big change back then.

This series is so fucking soulless and phoned in. It feels like it was designed using only focus test data and algorithms.
>"So guys, that game with the bear and the bird was popular, maybe put a robot on the main character's back instead of a bird? Make him a little snarky, but also helpful? The edgy animal thing is big too, let's make him an animal, but get this, ready? Guys, get this: he's a ""'fictional""" type of animal, so he's way more interesting. Now let's give him a DreamWorks face on the cover so that everybody realizes this isn't some baby game: this Lombax means business. Also guys, TECHNOLOGY, we need all of the weapons to be TECHNOLOGY, so players will see how advanced this game is. Jumping on random goons and waving swords around? That is sooooo 1999, guys. Our game is hip, it's cool, it's not your dad's platformer. You see, the thing we're doing here is..."
Crash, Jak, Sly Cooper and basically every other homegrown Sony platformer gives me a similar vibe, but this one is especially detestable.

R&C1 being unique doesn't make it better inherently. at the end of the day if I want a shooter platformer with no decent shooting controls i'd just go play Jak 2&3, at least i'd be busting my balls off knowing what i'm in for with those. 2 onwards changing things to be more shooter swap style did wonders for distinguishing it from everything else, but then those sequels had their own aches and issues of rushed development or experimenting with ideas.

As opposed to the original where every enemy has a 2 foot aggro range so every fight boils down to pull enemy to safe spot, kill, repeat?

They did the same thing to enemy health too. You could kinda telegraph how many hits enemies in the first game could take. 2 wrench swings, 1 devastator rocket, 2 bomb glove bombs, etc. Then they became bullet sponges and it's like "how many N60 storm or plasma whip strikes does this guy take? 10? 20?" who the fuck knows.
