I played the shit out of this game back in the day, and it’s wild how (even for someone who didn’t care for super challenging games) this inspired me to “git gud”. By the end I finished with all the kisses and even managed to finish that awful Master Level too.

That was nearly 25 years ago though and I think it’s time for a replay. I am fully expecting my old to get filtered, but I also am going to persevere and hopefully push through. I do remember hella grinding on 1-1 for extra lives and coins.

Sadly the sequel just wasn’t quite as inspired; something was off about it and it lost the amazing level design from the first one. And due to the series not selling well enough we never got the third one and never got to rescue the princess.

When you beat the final boss and rescue the princess and…. Oh fuck what the FUCK IS THAT OH NO

It's a huge, tedious pile of shit that everyone pretends is like GnG when only the first level has any association with it and it's just visuals. It's not hard. It's just slow and boring and wastes as much time as possible. It's not GnG and if you think that you haven't played this since you were a kid, never played GnG, or are just dumb. Sorry.

I have to agree with you. The first level is great and sets the game up as a GnG continuation, but that falls off fast. There's a reason 90% of screenshots online are all from the first level. It's otherwise a pretty standard action platformer, and it kind of turns to shit by the end. I remember it was a chore to keep going after that pirate ship ice world area. The save system sucked ass, too. I think it gets praise because it's A) a shallow homage to GnG, and B) the closest thing to the PS2's Zelda in terms of being "action-adventure game about cool guy with sword", which every console tries to offer at one point or another.

ludo. it didn't have to be there and I was expecting it to end with the wizard king bloke, so adding that made it feel like the devs actually gave a shit, in other words soul
as for the game itself it's a good time. I thought the save system was a bit weird with the pool thing, had to look it up because I had no idea how to use it, at one point I was worrying it had no actual save system at all somehow
in terms of being a 3D successor to GnG I'd say it's a good attempt, but it doesn't really have the same feeling of a constant onslaught on enemies. I guess it makes up for it with more platforming chops
shame the sequel isn't very good at all

It's because I have bilinear filtering turned off and it's intentional, I'd rather have a clean picture with broken shadows than a picture that looks like my glasses are dirty. I also always turn off on N64.

in b4 >that's not how bilinear filtering works you retard
Yes, it is and you can try it out yourself in PCSX2

I love this game. It's so underrated. I'm just not a fan of the boss fights. Probably the weakest aspect of the game. That and how you control the camera. I wish they'd make another one and make it more like the first. Army of Zin's not bad, but it doesn't feel as fun

>limited number of lives with a chance to continue if you have one of the grim reaper tokens, and if you lose that you're boned and you start the entire game over
>coins (money) have significant value, not only because you can use them to buy powerups, but because you have to pay just to save the fucking game
This shit was ballsy for 2002. I imagine this game would've sold even more if it had just gone with the conventional "oops, you died, start from last checkpoint" shit, but I respect the fact it didn't. I love when a game gives you a meaningful incentive to play well and avoid death instead of just making it a minor inconvenience with nothing at stake. I'd argue this game's approach was even more hardcore than a lot of NES era games. Maximo is a badass game man.

Being able to grind coins doesn't detract from the fact that a single death can strip you of your powerups. Also if the only way to proceed when you're a shitter is by being forced to do tiresome menial work in lieu of gitting gud, then I don't see the issue. The pay is proportional to the work.

IIRC it only sold like ~500k copies and its sequel did even worse. I think it just came out at the exact worst time. This game was like a swan song for old school action/platformer design sensibility in an era where games like Halo CE were leading players down hallways with objective markers, and most platformers were safe, sterile cartoon animal shit with easy, low engagement gameplay. It's a shame, because it's a legitimately excellent game. The crowd of the time just couldn't appreciate it nor git gud at it.
