Is this worth playing or is it garbage like everyone says? I enjoyed Final Fantasy 4, is it similar?

It's a perfectly functional JRPG with some charming elements. It's also basic and restrictive. If you want that then maybe it's worth playing; if you don't then it probably isn't. It doesn't feel very much like a real FF game and if you go into it wanting another FF4 then you'll probably be disappointed.

It used Butz sprite and is very lighthearted adventure.
If you liked 4 for its Melodrama then MQ might not be for you.

listen dipshit sometimes games start off terrible and then it gets good, sometimes it's just terrible, this is especially true with RPGs. I'm asking a genuine question if people think this is a good game and you're adding nothing to this conversation.

and I most definitely have contributed to the conversation, I told you its a short babby jrpg designed to be someone's first experience with the genre. sorry you're so butthurt that you missed that.

md5: 81c716ce2693add949cb8d5026435389๐Ÿ”
It's fine. It's not really badly designed, but since it was designed to be a really entrylevel introductory game, it's also a very easy game.
Honestly, it's a well made game even, and it has nice graphics and great music, but the fact that it's so easy makes it offputting to some people, and I get that, but you literally were not the target audience.

Arguably, the design intent of Mystic Quest was kind of misguided, but it advertises on the fucking box to be welcoming for beginners, what else would you expect?

>>11870960
If you have ever played any JRPG or similar kind of game before, such a say, Pokรฉmon, you should be able to easily beat this game in maybe 10 hours of play at most. It's extremely easygoing and forgiving, and there's really not that much exploring or side stuff, getting stuck is unlikely.

>>11870970
>It's also basic and restrictive.
Good way of putting it, the worldmap is even on rails.
As far as babby's first JRPG goes, Pokรฉmon mostly did a much better job with better world and gameplay.

>>11871023
It's competent, but very easy. There's no real bad design anywhere, it maintains its design and production quality from start to finish, which is to say that things are overall decent. Playing it for one hour should give you an idea on if you'd like to play the rest or not, and either way you'd come away thinking the music was good.

The music is the best aspect of it, but even that is eclipsed by the same composer's music for Rudra no Hihou, which is faaaar more ambitious. Might as well listen to it though, since it's pretty short. (Rudra no Hihou's soundtrack goes on for like two hours, which is pretty huge by SNES standards.)

I played the first one recently and found it to be fun and interesting. It was fairly simple, as one would expect of a Game Boy game that starts a new series, but not in an annoying way like how Mystic Quest was. I intend to play the others.

It's called Final Fantasy American in Japan. If you're American, that means you have to play it.

Best FF music on the SNES BTW, and the maps are peak. It's as if they made a NES JRPG on the SNES, only without the bank and with great sound and graphics.

It's fun, I can't add much the others in this thread didn't already, but it's a simple rpg with an almost Zelda twist of getting items used to traverse dungeons that can also be used in battles. You get a revolving door cast of helpers that are neat and keep the battles somewhat fresh. It's not hard at all, just keep that in mind. Music is great, the graphics have nice touches like near death sprites for all enemies, and it's a short play time if you're worried about investing too much time. It's pretty consistent in it's fun and quality the whole way through, try an hour and you'll know if you're gonna enjoy it or not.

Nah, Mystic Quest is safe.
>no game-specific editor
>no interest from weebs (including LoL) since it's the great-satan gaijin game
>Ted Woolsey has his name credited even in the Japanese version (only other game that did this was SMRPG, which was made as a take-two of the 'beginner's-RPG' idea)
>Ted Woolsey's writing style works really well with lighthearted games
There might be some obscure hex-hack out there that simply swaps the names around but no one wants to do a full text edit of the 'for-USA' game. I'm pretty sure there's a good reason it doesn't exist as far as I know.

I'm so tired of pretending Blaustein wasn't worse than Woolsey in every way.
>every time you ask someone what's wrong with Woolsey, 8/10 they point to stuff that had to be changed due to NOA standards or miniscule shit that came about due to either working with unfinished scripts, ridiculous limitations, or both
>his work is well-liked to the point even Japanese adapt it and language-students use it for English studies; Blaustein routinely gets the original creatives mad at him when they find out about his overreaching after the fact
>SotN fantranslation is actually good; every fanwork of a game touched by Woolsey is typically filled to the brim with back-stabbing, in-fighting, wiki-stealing, and autistic-screeching
I'm so glad Super Mario RPG remake proved that only bare essentials are required in modern day, so many people thought they were going to Slatterize it and got BTFO'd.
Anyway Mystic Quest is kinda dull but it's the stepping stone towards Super Mario RPG so I can't complain.

Well it's a JRPG so yeah it's that, but what else would you expect? It also explicitly places grinding spots on the world map - and they are optional, if I remember correctly - and it doesn't have a random encounter system. AND it's relatively short as JRPGs go. So it's not much of an investment to play through. It's not like one of those old JRPGs that expect you to tolerate endless battles while mapping giant, samey dungeon mazes. This game uses simple puzzles to flesh out its dungeons, rather than confusingly branching paths.

The graphics are charming, and the music is still nice, but I feel like I'm done here.
