Just finished replaying this and holy shit I forgot about how hard it was. I barely even managed to beat the game on normal and you people are playing on higher difficulties? That's just insane. That Nightmare boss almost made me lose my mind. So what's the hardest moment in the game in your opinion? Overall I'd say it's a good hack n slash title with great atmosphere. Now I wanna replay 2 and 3 as well

I surprisingly beat Dante Must Die when I was younger.
DMC3 though I got cucked out of the ending because Vergil is way too hard to kill.
Dont remember any particular harder moments, all of them kicked my balls.
Good times. Cant play Curayzee anymore because It support destroyed my thumb but this brings bacl memories.

Honestly never had much trouble with this game outside of Mundus and Nightmare, but those fights are more frustrating than hard, the rest of the game is a 10/10 that still holds up. Make sure to be good at slash cancelling, nade rolling and Ifrit charging if you play the higher difficulties

Absolutely fuck those shadow dogs, dealing with just one is completely okay but when there are two of them it's absolute aids. Also the Griffon fight on the ship is a crapshoot
But yeah Nightmare is so bad I'd even go so far as to say that the game would've been better off without it

I can't beat the first lava scorpion boss. I've only tried about a dozen times, but all of my deaths were because Dante has such low health and I kept getting hit when my dodges were misread due to a camera angle change. Unable to combo a boss that constantly blocks my attacks, I gave up.

Later I learned that I was supposed to just abuse the Devil Trigger system and just shoot the boss to death. I never liked switching weapons and their movesets either, especially not all the time throughout every fight.

you could say it filtered me

You just have to use devil trigger and also hit the fireballs back at him. People rarely talk about this but DMC1 is one of those games with reverse difficulty curve, it genuinely gets easier as you go because of the upgrades, especially when you make your HP bar bigger. There are still some difficulty spikes though but you'll manage. Have you played 3?

I played it for the first time last year, and it definitely kicked my fucking arse with that first bloody scorpion boss and the Angelo fights. There was also some laser boss in Hell or wherever that kept killing me because the camera didn't point at his laser attack kek. Those aside though, I thought it was a very fair challenge and not a game that should be on anywhere near "Hardest Games of All Time" lists, at least on Normal difficulty. I guess DMC1's difficulty got its reputation because 3D action games that seriously tried to involve the player were still pretty new?

>So what's the hardest moment in the game in your opinion?
Nightmare is a bitch due to his sphere system and how their condition transfers between fights (so going too hard on either of two right from the very first fight is a BAD idea)
I also had issues with Death Scissors and Death Scythe during my first playthrough, but in the long run they're very good training dummies for timing your hits (and in DMC1 it's all about timing - you don't get crazy combos to perform like in DMC3/4/5).
I guess I wasn't a big fan of Mundus' first phase, but I wouldn't call it hard.
Can't recall any other point of the game where I'd be stuck for more than 1-2 retries. Also I agree with >>11872929 about reverse difficulty curve - unlocking some OP moves for Ifrit and maxing out your DT bar makes a huge difference.

I tried 3 but I felt like it expected me to be familiar with 1's combat and to fully enjoy it in order to appreciate 3's combat, even the back of the box and the fans always think of 3 as the true sequel to 1.

DMC becomes so much easier when you realise using the DT heals you

I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets absolutely obliterated by this game, DMC1 fans who do DMD runs while getting S ranks on all missions probably think people like us play JRPGs and VNs exclusively but in terms of difficulty even on normal I find this game to be absolutely on par with NES action titles like Ninja Gaiden. It's just that getting filtered by a PS2 game feels embarassing. DMC1 definitely feels more 'strategic' than 3 and virtually all of the other hack n slash games that followed. Basically what this >>11872952 anon said

My original copy of DMC3, the launch version for the PS2, is ball breakingly hard. I distinctly remember struggling to beat Cerberus in high school for a week straight, on fucking Normal difficulty. Every day after school, getting my shit pushed in by this dog again and again. And he's not even one of the harder bosses. I did beat it eventually, but this boss rush stage in particular can climb a wall of dicks. I will happily replay the special edition or Switch port instead these days.

The upgrades make up for a huge amount of jump in the difficulty.

Also enemies literally have less health on DMD than normal, at least in the US version. Bosses have more HP and deal more HP, but you have way more moves unlocked, a massive HP bar, and a ton of DT after upgrades.

So no, it's not really that much harser on DMD unless doing fresh save, it's just a shitty annoying game with dogshit camera, awful jump, and attacks that magnetize from 30 feet away even when you don't have lock-on active.

Back in the days the only version of DMC3 I had was the infamous PC port and I beat that shit on keyboard, the game also used to crash constantly. I know it's nothing compared to the original US release of 3 on the PS2 but still, the controls were hilariously bad and I don't remember them being customizable

DMD is unaffected, so no, original DMC3 was not some uber hard version.

DMD is the same shit, items are just as OP, and it's just as easy. The only difficult thing about DMC3 is if you're going for SS-ranks (not just S-ranks) on DMD.
