Western insects frequently sacrifice fun and playability just to make their game more impressive on a technical level and boast to their demoscene/engineer friends. The entire Amiga library is basically an example of this. Games all advertising advanced collision, layers of parallax scrolling, scaling, more simultaneous colours, fmv, and all the bells and whistles they could think to jam into the code, without ever considering how it would affect the game design and make it needlessly frustrating for the player.
