This is so bad compared to the first one. The mechanics allow to go faster except the level design does the contrary and is full of gimmicky shit that slow you down and barely anything that rewards skillfull speed play. The bosses are pretty bad, the level and game design is full of inconsistencies

Yeah 1 is the only truly good one regardless of what anyone says. It makes sense because it was developed by Yuzo Koshiro's company as opposed to some GG/SMS shovelware developer called Aspect

t. had all of them as a kid, can't play them as an adult without getting bored out of my mind

Chaos is alright the difficulty makes it targetted as little kids. I wonder if the SMS had a similar fate as the NES had in Europe in the mid 90's, being relegated to pre-teens

Replayed 2 after being used to 3 and thought 2 is so much smoother, and racing. 3 is literally you never even go fast after level 2 you are just jumping on this shit and that shit activating levers and shit. I almost forgot that sonic 2 has long fast speeding sections every level plus it's hugely rewarding to be able to stick to the top path. Sonic 3 and snk have way too much backtracking and "try hard" map design

I don't personally think so, I started with 2 but when I first played 1 I thought the game up to and including the forest level was better. I just think the later levels of sonic 2 are just really memorable.
Some cool things I like.
In Skyhigh jumping on the springs and going left is a little secret area
The minecart in gimmick mountain
How fast the maze is in Scrambled egg
Aquatic lake how you have 2 different ways to go and bouncing off the water as well as that seal.
Crystal level for finding the chaos emeralds.
Liked how the levels were less linear.
Only thing I didn't like that much is I think the speed shoes don't do anything and it doesn't have as many of those cool jumps like in the first level of sonic 1 but there are some in the later levels.
