Breath of Fire is fucking boring if you've played any other retro JRPG.

It's really good. I tried getting into BoF2 even with a faster growth mod since I heard it was really grindy but I still couldn't get into it. And BoF4 I just had lots of trouble running the PC version of - it crashed a lot for me. And frankly it feels like I'm too old now

I just dont like how it handled masters and punished you for leveling without you even knowing how they worked early on.

Bought it a few years ago and played it once, fell asleep about an hour in and havent picked it up since. I got a bit further on 4 but haven't picked that back up either. Couldn't get into 1 and 2. Maybe one day I'll go back to 3 and 4 but life is getting in the way

I see a lot of people mention 4 for the graphics but I enjoyed 3 more overall. Maybe the style isn't as unique but it's still a beautiful game and I thought the story was a little better. Really enjoyed that twist in the tower leading into the timeskip

Despite the Capcom pedigree, these games come off very average to me. BoF came out just a few months before FFVI and it feels like a nicer looking version of an 8-bit RPG. However, III may be the best of the BoF games. It looks great and has a cool soundtrack and appealing character designs.

bof2 is a massive slog you have to mod bof2 to double xp and reduce encounters 94% to actually play the game

played it on the gba once, was fun but not something i'd want to do again

I have always wanted to play JRPGs because I appreciated what they did for the genre and gaming as a whole, but I could never stomach the game play.

I remember trying to get into Final Fantasy 1 when I was 10, and the same reasons why I was never been able to jive with it, are still with me.

Play one that's not so dated and grindy. Chrono trigger is usually the first jrpg people recommend.

I couldn't get thru chrono trigger either. Idk man. The turn-based combat is not at all stimulating to me and I end up avoiding all encounters due to it. But because I do this, it feels like I'm not really playing the game anymore.

I was originally a BoF2 hater, but I've come around to it. The biggest problem, without a doubt, is fusions cancelling at low health. You can be working your way through the final dungeon, get hit by an unlucky crit, and congrats, now one of your party members is literally 1/3 of its effectiveness. It's completely fucked, and some jap needs to be executed for this.

I tried those too, like Seiken Densetsu 3, but the fact that you only control one character and just press attack most of the time, is really boring to me.

It's probably the most comfy form of gameplay because it's inherently non-stressful. I understand how some people could see it as slow, boring or unengaging, but frustrating and annoying? Sorry, but something might be wrong with you

I couldn't get into pokemon, either, because of this. I detested pokemon growing up, so I cannot relate to the poke-mania that many people have.

To me, games based on ur reflexes were the best because it always kept u on edge and that to me was fun.

I like scott the woz has an identical view.

Where are the Phd papers written about this stuff then? There are none. There is no higher form of analysis of these games other than it.

Maybe you could argue that stuff like reverse-engineering these games is a higher form, but that takes a programmer perspective and shifts away from a user one.

I play both type of games so I can't relate, but I think I get it. Games that test your reflexes activates your neurons and you probably don't mind it too much when you die since gitting gud is the reward for you?
