It really is like an Cold War era Eastern European cartoon, and it's such a weird world it represents. The minute you start the game and get the guy on the flying carpet whipping out Cuneiform.
I don't know what they were going for, but it's fascinating. I can't even blame them since they only had two or three games to work with, one of the wildly different from the others, and a cartoon that they decided to treat as canon

The same animation studio worked on a bunch of other games, check them out and see if you like any of them better.
Sometimes they did nicer quality animation than the CDi Mario and Zelda games.

I like the characters in the CDI games, they feel like a precursor to the eccentric NPCs in OoT and MM.
