What does the Retro Gaming scene look like here? I've heard they love KOF '98 which is based. I'm moving there for job.

I traveled there for a couple of days and tried finding some Taiwan-only Wonderswan games. Went to the most famous place in Taipei for used games, but couldn't find anything. Everywhere, the oldest games were like... A few Wii games here and there. Maybe a small handful of PS2 games. I only saw a couple of other titles even older than that, and nothing CIB. I asked around and showed pictures of Wonderswan games and all of the store owners were like "ah nah, nah, no one sells that stuff, that's old as shit"

The scene itself is probably lackluster as the other guy said
But if you actually manage to dig around and get lucky, Taiwan has a fucking fascinating domestic RPG history on PC. Lost of old influential games, some series that are still going to this day. I don't know how non-Japan east Asian countries do their thing, but as gaming got bigger and more successful in recent times, most of them are too young or were too poor to give a shit about the history of their medium in their own country. But that's my assumption base on passing impressions, but you got stuff like Heroes of Jin Yong getting fan mods for decades

As far as retro gaming, it's basically bootleg shit and weird ass DOS games.
Though I don't know if anyone bothers preserving shit pre 6th gen for sale if that anon is to be believed.

Probably no one will care much about this, but Xuan Yuan Sword 2 is on Steam, and while not in English, it appears to contain the undumped Japanese localization. I’m looking forward to trying it out since Japanese IBM PC games from that era are unicorn level rare.

holy shit
>and while not in English
damn

XYS 2 is interesting, one of those pre-Pokemon games with monster capturing mechanics. The existence of RPG's in Taiwan and the Chinese speaking world in general is likely solely due to bootlegged translations of Dragon Quest, so I'm sure SMT landed there too. I know that one of the only pdf's of the tabletop RPG of SMT online for years was a horridly organized Chinese fan translation from Hong Kong

IIRC. they translated lots of eroges and waifu games like Galaxy Angel.
also made some wuxia RPGs.

>>11875334
oh yeah they made arcade games too. ROT3K was peak not-DnD beat-em-up.

>>11875479
Jin Yong made some of the most popular wuxia novels yes.

I have one of the famicoms that was made and sold for their region. Apparently they're pretty rare. It doesn't seem like gaming was very popular in the 80's there. Either that or bootlegs were king.

I remember a Three Kingdoms beat em up, I don't know if it was Taiwanese/Chinese though, I think it was based on a manga
>Jin Yong made some of the most popular wuxia novels yes.
Yes, he's the Tolkien of the eat. And Heroes of Jin Yong is a game based on his books. I think the 20 years of mods were basically adding all the other characters and settings from books that weren't in the original game

>I remember a Three Kingdoms beat em up
Capcom made two Sanguo themed beat em ups: Dynasty Wars and a sequel named Warriors of Fate. There's also IGS' Knights of Valour series, which are Taiwanese.
