Hello, I'm trying to remember a JRPG I came across when I was a very very small child, so young in fact I still didn't know how to read. Needless to say, the game in question was a complete nonstarter for me at the time. I remember it being a 2D game with a top-down perspective, I don't think it was isometric, but all that might be wrong considering how long ago it was. However, what I distinctly remember was that it opened with the protagonist in a field of tall grass in the dead of night, it had an eerie, or at least lonely atmosphere. Does this ring a bell to anyone? I'd love to find out what it was after so long.
Also general PS1 JRPG thread I suppose.

Funny that you post a BoF 4 pic as your description reminds me of the Breath of Fire 2 opening.
You do start in a field of grass by day, and then there's a sequence at night, all with an eerie atmosphere.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looking it up that doesn't seem to be the right game. I forgot to mention that I played this on the PS1 (or a very VERY small chance perhaps it was actually n64 but I strongly doubt it).

To keep the thread alive outside of my search, I've most recently played Legend Of Legaia. I really enjoy its combat system and it just has a fun world. I like the art style for the human characters in the overworld, I think they did a good job with the 3D chibis. I haven't gotten very far though, I gotta get back into it.

I appreciate all these suggestions. None of these unfortunately look familiar though.
However I will say that while >>11875687 is obviously wrong since I never had a super famicom, this scene from the game is the closest to what I remember seeing. Main difference is that this is a sidescrolling scene while my memory recalls a top-down scene.

As I was only about three or four years old at the time I can't be absolutely certain. However the only other console I had at that time was an N64, so that's the only other possibility.

Guess you can download every NA released JRPG for the PS1. Then Google if it's a 3D game and rule it out. I see there's a list of NA PS1 RPGs list, but it adds action adventure games like Alundra and has western games like Might and Magic, Dark Stone, and Diablo. It at least narrows it down to 99 games.

Unfortunately no. The reply above you is right about how fleeting our memory may be, especially memories from such an early stage in life. Whatever the game is, it absolutely had to be on either the Playstation or the N64 as there were no other consoles around me at the time. But whatever it is, I may have also simply completely misremembered what I saw at this point, perhaps it wasn't a night scene, perhaps it wasn't 2d, perhaps it was isometric. Who knows, I'll still keep searching but there's a very real chance it simply may not exist as I remember.
So with that I'm content to let this thread turn into a general JRPG thread instead. Talk about the games you've been playing recently. During my search I learned about the PoPoLoCrois series and I love the artstyle. Anyone here play it?

On the topic of games one vaguely remembers, I have a game I've been trying to track down. This was either a Playstation 2 game or a Gamecube game. I remember sandy, desert-y sort of box art. Some cool vehicle on the back. Maybe a post-apocalypse or science-fantasy vibe? Two or three women on the front art.

It was a choice between that, or Skies of Arcadia, and my mom didn't like the midriffs on display, so Skies was what I went home with. But what was that other game?

Taking advantage of this thread, does anyone remember a Japanese PSX RPG where the camera was also kind of bird's-eye view (not isometric), and you had a kind of interesting dodging system? One thing I remember well for obvious reasons is that after you finished the first section/dungeon/mission (I don't remember well), there was a cutscene of a girl taking a shower completely naked (but obviously she was shown from behind).
Thank you

I'm curious to see if someone can find it.
When I was a kid I played BoF 4 at an older friend's house. I didn't know how to read English yet, so I got lost around the first town.
I didn't remember the name of the game and searched for stuff like "ps1 game that starts on a desert", it took a while to find it, but I eventually did. It's funny how it ended up being pretty different from my memory.

there was an old game, definitely 3d with really blocky graphics. i dont think it was an rpg, maybe an action or hack-n-slash type. i think your character could copy/clone enemies and use their moves.
