For me, Nightmare Creatures 1 and 2 for the ps1 are some of the most underrated games in history. Both have an amazing atmosphere, umique characters and are fun to play, they deserve more recognition.

Not until you hit that sewer level in NC1. That shit is like stage 2 and has bullshit insta-death pitfalls.

Yeah I tried it a while ago and thought it was a little odd that the only options were easy and hard. I picked hard and was struggling. I'm sure it's doable but I need to try it again on easy. Not sure why there was no normal mode lol.

While certainly rough in some areas, I liked this a lot. It's satisfying to learn the most efficient ways to take down each enemy type. The limb-severing attacks/combos are fun too. One major flaw however is...

Never been a fan of this, especially when you're penalized so harshly

Never played it either, though I remember hearing nothing good, i.e., unpolished rush job, glitches. The fact that you only play as one character (that ISN'T a qt) didn't help either.

No idea desu but some anon pointed out in another NC thread that the game runs extremely fast on PC for some reason, so keep that in mind

> I remember hearing nothing good
Yeah, same that's why I never bothered. Also because it was exclusive to the PS1 and DC

Two big problems that keep Nightmare Creatures from being a classic: The adrenaline system forces the player to rush and turns what would otherwise be an atmospheric gothic horror into frenetic mad dash hack'n'slash where the player has no time to appreciate the backdrop. The game is dripping with atmosphere but you're screwed if you try to drink in it.

Problem 2: The bullshit boss stages are just too arcadey. They feel totally out of place, just like the adrenaline system. Carrying over arcade machine gameplay structures without thought was a common error that stuck around all throughout the 90's though.

It's a shame they fumbled on these things. So close and yet so far from catching the lighting in the bottle.

I loved the cemetery stage because of the spirits you'd see flying up from their graves. It felt so creepy at the time. Something purely supernatural in a game where everything else was more ambiguously the result of science and the occult. I think the effect would have been severely lessened if the game had like regular ghost enemies or something.

I loved the aesthetics and atmosphere of NC1, but the gameplay itself was WAY too simple and repetitive for my liking.

I actually like the Double Dragon 2 jumping puzzles. They are fundamentally deeply flawed yes, and if I were designing a game of this sort then I would not have included them, but once you memorize how to get through them they're... kinda fun, I think. And I like the atmosphere they provide.

Eh honestly I played both and I thought they were just more western slop. Western devs really couldn't make a good game so save their lives back then. The combat just fucking sucks, they aren't fun to play at all.
