Imagine, GTA1, 2, and 3 all on one console.
The only other games that had a chance were Half Life and Propeller Arena, both of which were basically finished and then just never released.

They were on thin ice by the time the memecast was even conceived of. They stood no chance if they weren't willing to humble themselves, not try to beat everyone else to the punch and actually be sure they had something to offer that the others didn't, which is of course the opposite of what they did

Nothing would have saved Sega besides an alternate reality where Sony never existed.

This, or if roughly 100000 variables and factors had gone differently for the Sega Saturn

Bleemcast baby.
>>11878457
My personal take is they should have just dumped the saturd all together and made the dreamcast EVEN BETTER but sadly SoJ didn't understand how much SoA saved their ass.

If that's the case: Some autistic nerds "saved" Dreamcast some weeks ago with that GTA III port.

Yes, they simply proved it was possible and had R* continued to develop for the DC like they originally planned we would have had an admittedly worse experience to the PS2 but not that much worse.
Also bleemcast was of the era, there's other, much better emulators now for that thing.

SEGA was dead no matter what because they confused their customers with hardware for no good reason and Sony was buying out every 3rd party dev around while aggressively marketing about how superior they are to the rest. Had they not released fifty different consoles in 2 years, maybe they'd still be around

1) Online gaming - a first to be available in consoles by default.
2) Clean and crisp 3d - just like many consider SNES graphics better than NES graphics for 2d, 6th gen gave 3D the nice detail and framerate that it deserves. Also like how you don't need anything more than SNES for good 2D you don't need anything more than 6th gen for good 3D.
3) Sega's first party games: Sonic Adventure, Sega Sports, Ecco, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online, Crazy Taxi, Super Monkey Ball and many more - these were strong game series and several of them continue to this day.

While I agree they weren't in a good position to decide to lead the next gen, the saturn was the first fourth gen, so it was their "turn" again to come out with a console by that point. Also, the dreamcast was powerful for its cost of only $200, while the PS2 came later and was $300 while not being too much superior.
4) I suspect the dreamcast was also very easy to work for, that's why there are heaps of conversions of fifth gen (including PC games) to dreamcast.

We can look back and say it was a mistake because it didn't work, but it might have been worse if they had waited.

They literally had Xbox live before anyone else, as a matter of fact sega net was in many ways superior to Xbox live especially it's original iteration. PS2 and Gamecube's online capabilities were a joke by comparison. Literally the only reason me and my buddies had the DC was to do online multiplayer on a console, it was genuinely revolutionary and the fact it's talked about so little leads me to believe most of the people who had one were too young or retarded to figure out the online, after all it was the first to do this on a console.
