Started this one after I had alot of fun with some classicvanias, I'm really enjoying it but my main problem is more often then not im just kinda running in circles , how can I find paths to take without wasting time?

I mean like that's the whole point of those games

I really like metroidvanias and iv always been a hugeee fan of the metroid series specifically but, usually there's some sort of intended obvious progression, like getting super missiles to open green doors or getting power bombs to enter yellow doors, basically you usually find some sort of obstacle that needs something you need to find.

I can't really find the obstacle or the thing I need to progress in SOTN

You just play the game, explore, and fill out the map. Exploration that doesn't always give you a participation trophy is a key part of this type of game. Then you look at the map and plan your route. It's more fun to play the game naturally than to look up a map online of where everything is.
On a replay you should know where most things are and will be able to streamline it.

Just fill out the map and you'll beat it, I fucking suck at these 'search action' games and that's how I got the best ending but I admit that I looked up a guide once

Yeah, you also need to get a certain item to access the second half of the game but if you explore everything you won't miss it

I thought the progression was straight-forward.. Maybe you missed or forgot some path.

Bottom left corner, basically search for spots like these and fill out the map. It's really easy

Have you talked to the librarian? He sells an item that will let you open sealed blue doors.

you can also buy a map from him that shows off most of the castle, a few areas are still hidden though.

There's one back near where you killed the first boss(es) that should open up a new area, I'm not going to say much more so as to not spoil it

There's actually more than one item you need to get the best endings and even though you might find them if you explore thoroughly you could still just not use them when you're supposed to.

But it's all good because IIRC you can just get whatever ending you get naturally the first time then reload your save to explore more or do it differently next time

I'm going off of memory here so I'm not 100% but I think that room above the save point in the upper left corner of the map has a blue door in it so you should be able to go left from there.

If you go back to the clock room with the double jump or bat ability you can walk in and out of the room and eventually the statue on the left hand side will move and you can jump up the opening to reach a new area

On the right hand side of the map after you go down the long vertical shaft and head right towards the save room if you drop down to the bottom left corner of the vertical room just to the left of the save point, there's a breakable wall that leads to a secret area

this after playing it once I learned some speedrun tricks and that opened up a lot
then I played a few dozen randomizers right after and had a hell of a time
doing a playthrough after a few month break and just hit second castle after 1:15
