Two. As for the rest, it depends on how you can tolerate mediocre endings.

2 felt really similar to 1 when I played them back to back. Haven't played the others due to lack of interest, the tool system was interesting but almost everything else felt kind of mediocre. Had some good songs though and who could forget that awesome opening to the first game

3 has some serious flaws but I forgive it for being a charming turn based rpg set in some western anime world. Pretty cool. Music is decent

2 and 3 are definitely worth it. Alter Code F is good too, it's different and adds enough to do to make it worth it. 4 and 5 aren't quite as good, but still worth playing in my opinion. Then again, I'm a hardcore WA fanboy, so I may be biased.

Couldn't tell you because the first game isn't worth playing and I quit the series.

I am currently half way through WA3 and I really love this game but man did they make alot of bad design choices. The game is needlessly cryptic and confusing with all of its systems and navigation. The exploring thing gets really old after a while too. Its basically impossible to play this game without a guide. Love the graphics, artstyle, music and the combat tho

i've heard 1 and 2 are good, 3 is fine, skip 4, 5 is below fine but worth playing
that's just what i've heard from jrpg gobblers I knew irl
the same kinda applies to suikoden from what he said too.

Play the first for curiosity's sake, but then Play Alter Code F, which is THE definitive version of the first game (a remake from the ground up, and 100 times better in every way)

dear god, no. the soundtrack is butchered, the localization is shit, the puzzles are dumbed down, and the migrant seals make exploraiton an absolute chore. the only thing it does better is giving Rudy a gun for his "normal" weapon.

It's cool how Kaneko is still trucking along, even if most of his output since has been /a/ (well, most of it is more /m/) stuff
shame Armed Fantasia is prolly dead tho

2 is good beyond some questionable (in terms of quality) translation, just remember to level HP Up in P.S.S. on everyone ASAP and not bother with Status Resistance skills.
3 is great for actual Wild West atmosphere but dear god did devs go overboard with puzzle bosses and a bunch of cryptic stuff. Also it REALLY overstays its welcome (which never happened in 1 and 2 for me) - by the time third arc started I really lost interest in the plot, and it doesn't help that final boss of WA3 is the epitome of "overstays its welcome".
4 is NOTHING like the first three games - super linear, hex grid battle system, no Tools and minimal amount of puzzles, dull cast, plot came out of generic SNES JRPGs, fuckall optional content. Raquel carries the game both in plot and gameplay and she's the only reason I ever bothered to finish the game.
5 took WA4's foundation but tried to bring back a bunch of features from first three games, and the ending result is... okay, I guess. Still not a fan of its generic plot but at least devs learned from many mistakes of WA4 and even though it's still too different to first three games I had some fun with it.
XF is a puzzle TRPG - no, it's not a FFT or Disgaea or FE clone, it's a puzzle game with very specific ways to win each fight
I didn't like remake of WA1 - it's basically WA1 trying to fit into WA3's hide and the ending result is very rough. OST is (in my opinion) worse, balance can be broken even faster than in original (Scape Goat spam became available only near the end of the game for optional bosses), dungeon design is worse. Having 6 party members instead of 3 might be a deal-breaker for some people but to me original trio worked perfectly.

At least AF devs had something to show (even if they clearly needed like 3 more years or so), now Shadow Hearts thing? I doubt anything will come out of it in the next 10 years.

I never liked how 3 was kind of a direct sequel to 1, but not really, but almost, but not quite. Almost like they kept changing their mind

Also Filgaia at that point in the history is functionally a dead planet, like what is even the point of anything you do? The very oceans are completely dried up, and you do nothing at all to actually fix things.

Wild Arms 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, but I could never get into 1 or 2.

I even bought Alter Code F from Gamestop when it first came out to give it another shot (and oh god was a bitch to find one that had it in stock). I'm told it's pretty rare these days.
