>create 3 timeless classics in a row
>follow it up with one of the lamest entry in the series for the next gen handheld
What the fuck went wrong? Why couldn't they do what Komami did with Castlevania and follow it up with 3 even better games on the DS?

Dropped this after a like 8 maps. Incredibly boring, slow, and ugly game.

The one in the middle simply titled Fire Emblem. It was the first one the west got officially and it has a big tutorial story for newcomers.

I found a enlish patch for the jp only GBA fire emblem, do they have any story continuation or doesn't it matter which one you play first.

Fire Emblem 6 is a sequel to 7 despite releasing earlier
The games are connected but I dunno how people decide which one to play first, 6 is much harder than 7 too

I enjoyed the GBA games on a first playthrough, but I really think the structure of FE's mechanics aren't very good. The game encourages metagaming over strategy where you make suboptimal decisions in combat to funnel EXP to certain characters coupled with an annoying inventory system. The classes aren't well balanced with some feeling like a trap to invest in who are eclipsed by others in every way. The maps require you to know things like enemy spawn triggers and timers on higher difficulties along with how to abuse the enemy AI which just drags down the strategy further.

The games are great on the surface, they just could use some adjustments under the hood to really add depth.

Not really. A few FE6 characters make brief cameos in 7, but nothing in 7 really matters to 6 until the post-credit stinger.

On the upside there's so many romhacks these days that you pretty much have infinite gba emblem to play if you dont like the direction of the modern games.
I've been surprised at the amount of quality stuff coming out these days.

Anything of note that came out recently?

besides vision quest and the SOV demake, most romhacks i've tried come with a wide degree of rate them gently, as the fan-made, not-for-profit projects they are

I'm playing 6 right now and I hard agree. One incredibly annoying thing that is required for recruiting certain units or obtaining certain promotion items on hard mode is knowing how the ally AI works. Like on this map, how the fuck was I supposed to know the pegasus knights would just suicide into the boss once recruited, instead of flee like the ally archers do? You have to bait them out by leaving weaker enemies alive and then immediately rescue them, but learning that requires frustrating mistakes.
Without using any sort of guide, the intention seems to be for players to constantly replay maps and fuck up on shit that's not their fault until they learn all the ins and outs of the AI, when reinforcements spawn, who can recruit certain characters, etc. You do get better at parsing the devs' intentions as you play more FE games, but there's still so much bullshit that you have to be prepared for.

I don't know if I'd call these games timeless classics, like don't get me wrong, they're enjoyable but not the best in terms of game design, obviously the sacred stones allows you to level grind, and I don't think I need to explain the huge balance issues, and the music of course was heavily limited by the unfortunate hardware of the GBA, overall I felt visually and audio wise the SNES FE games where more enjoyable but I think regardless there is something for everyone among the GBA and SNES games, the later DS games with fucking pancake FE1 remake is dogshit though the art direction was the worst thing they did in a long time

There's kind of 3 eras you can jump in
Kaga is the OG era, you can really feel the TTRPG design philosophies in them. I think Tear Ring Saga is a somewhat plain but least frustrating in all his designs, Vestaria Saga being the easiest to obtain since its on PC.
The OP is referencing the classic era which all are just solid packages. While you can go chronological >>11879658 just know that the prequel (7) smoothed out a lot of the rough edges and is the entry point for most NA fags. Otherwise if your want 3D, PoR is good if you can deal with the wet noodle animations.
Then there's the nu-Emblem with Awakening on and they're perfect if discover you're turbo-autistic about build comps, but genuinely uneven messes for everything else. If you're on VR asking, I don't think you need the low barrier of entry they throw around.
Personally the series is best when it leans into its simple, elegant core and avoids the bloat. I think 6/7 is solid foundation to go back to the Kaga games (4&5 specifically) to really see how impressive they are despite their many flaws.

I love these three games so much.
They each have strengths and weaknesses that I enjoy, and that's important I think, otherwise what's the point?

I want to get into the series with FE1 on the NES. I should probably try it again sometime soon.
