So a new TG16 CD game is being made. Is there much of a homebrew scene for the TG16? I know there is a big one for NES and Genesis, but I haven't heard of much homebrew for other systems beyond that other than maybe a random small game coming out once every several years for random other platforms.

Also, a single-screen Bubble Bobble clone feels like a compete waste of resources for a CD-based system personally.

People make games for PC Engine CD instead of a regular sytem to avoid the hassle of manufacturing new HuCards. There are several CD aftermarket gamew which are only a few megabytes in size and have no CD audio tracks.

That's a good point, I also forgot that system also had no copy protection on it's CDs so I can see why making homebrew on a CD makes a lot more sense. (Though it will still feel cheap if it's a CD-R and not a professionally pressed disk)

Though I guess that sucks for people who don't have the CD-addon.

Actually, this made me curious now, have there been any homebrew games for this system that did come on HuCards?

Atlantean, a 2014 Defender clone with an underwater theming. Apparently it is compatible with both PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16, despite the systems having different card slot pinouts.

Did not know that either. I know the NES and Famicom had a different pinout and slot, but I thought most systems generally used the same pinout worldwide and relied on other means (usually a slightly different shape/tabs on the cartridge to physically prevent it from being inserted) as a form of region lock.

Never seen a TG16/PCEngine in person so I don't know much about them other than Bonk was it's mascot at one point and there was a LOT of add-ons.

For Genesis people make carts because they can swap out the graphics easier and its probably annoying to deal with the file system Sega CD uses.

The Kickstarter just finished, I backed it solely based on accidentally downloading the Henshin Engine from here in a rom pack and finding it super fun, I tried to find a way to buy it but there was none. Near the end they actually gave you the option to buy Henshin Engine as an add on so cool.
I didn't really look at the game too closely, just backed it because they have a good track record it will probably be decently made. Really its Bubble Bobble with different graphics and I'm fine with that.

This system is actually a bit easier to program than nes but you don't want to make a homebrew that only 20 people play.

PCE/TG16 cards have the same number of pins but they're wired differently as a region lock.

I see, are they repinned in such a way that they just simply don't work, or in a way where it can actually cause damage?
