What is the best console combo? For me, it's SNES and PS1.

This is the quantity over quality pick. You're effectively getting four consoles with PS2 and Wii having PS1/GC back compat, and you can easily install emulators on Wii, but the problem is that the PS2 and Wii have almost nothing worth playing on their own, so you might as well just get a PS1/GCN at that point (which is a shit combo) and the emulators on Wii are all trash so they aren't worthy of including in the discussion. Also PS1 support on PS2 isn't perfect even on the phat models and Wii just adds the extra hassle of having to load the GCN games through the long, drawn out Wii menu and using a shitty wiimote no less, with no gameboy player support to boot. This is also ignoring the fact that Wii isn't retro.

The actual best combo is PS1 and Xbox.

PS1 offers the 4th and 5th gen perfected, Xbox offers the 6th gen perfected. What more do you need?

PC/SNES was my combo in the mid-late 90s. SNES covered the PC's weakness of not having good platformers. Yeah, there were also JRPGs and emulation, but I didn't get into those until around Y2K.

Genesis and NES. I prefer stuff like Shinobi instead of later SNES games which were going toward multi hour very long quests with saves. NES for the interesting earthy color pallete.

While I have stuff like Neo Geo, Jaguar, Virtual Boy, PCE CD, C64, Amiga, Speccy, it was more about getting them before they got way too expensive, most people would be totally happy just to get an NES, Snes, Genesis and Ps1 and be 95% satisfied. The popular systems you do notice some sameyness, NES and SMS having about 400 tiles of graphic detail, SNES and GEN about 1800 tiles, ps1 2D games about 2mb of graphic tiles. This is what mainly leads me to try out those weird systems to see something different.
