Its an impressive port but to play devils advocate there was never a genuine reason for RE2 to be on 2 discs. Nothing about the second campaign couldn't have fit on the first disc considering its mostly the same content. I don't know the official reason the game shipped on two discs, Ive heard it was an accident or something.

People act like a port has to be literally the same game.

It doesn't. Even if you ignore how taxing it is on the CPU to decode AV1 and I HIGHLY doubt even the best MIPS assembly god could get an N64 to do it in realtime, I actually tried to AV1 compress FF7's cutscenes. Short answer, no, AV1 is not the solution. I forget what the best I could do was exactly, but it wasn't getting anywhere close to the 64MB RE2 cart and the quality was getting REALLY bad.
AV1 like HEVC only achieves huge compression ratios on HD->4K video because it's so clever at turning large areas of low complexity into tiny numbers. When you're encoding lores video with high frequency changes, it barely does any better than old mpeg4.

If we're going to use technology that didn't exist in the 90s, then why make it an N64 cart at all? Just keep going and keep adding more "helper" chips until eventually you've got a chinese android box running a hacked swanstation.

>CHECKMATE sony, we can play resident evil 2 with extremely compressed audio/sound so the games atmosphere is completely fucked and for more money then the ps1 version because n64 carts were expensive to produce so nintendo raised the cost of games. never-mind even more advanced games in the same series were already out on ps1 by the time we got this.
I dunno why these aging console war types always talk about shit like this instead of actually great n64 exclusive games like sin and punishment, but I guess it was always about my toy wins instead of just playing good games.

Well, state of the art is a stretch, but even if it was, it was state of the art for 1992. Giving people who couldn't afford a better computer a cheap way to play 3D makes infinitely more sense than a modern day chip put on an N64 cart to achieve something that couldn't have been done in 1996 to play a game from that year on hardware that wasn't available for a price that no one would have paid...

It's fun for the technical achievement. Sin & Punishment is a good game, but it's clearly an N64 game built around the hardware. RE2 was clearly a PS1 game built entirely around its strengths of which the N64 shares few and yet they achieved it. Which makes you wonder what other games could have been achieved with the right development team. So we wonder. And speculate. And shitpost. And then argue about semantics.

in spite of all the ads that suggest nintendo marketers are gonna kill themselves after seeing the FF7 FMV's the actual problem is the games like 80 CD quality audio tracks. There's a reason why every n64 game has the same 10 songs playing the whole game and/or a bunch of brief midi loops

Star fox 64 off the top of my head had a lot of music I donโ€™t think many games Iโ€™ve played on the 64 have less than 20 tracks and there is a surprisingly large amount of good n64 songs I would argue perhaps the limitations are why they are so fun to listen to because itโ€™s almost a genre.

I really like SF64 but that's one of the biggest examples I can think of where every song is just a brief midi that loops the whole level. catchy and short =/= bad but you're crazy if you're telling me you wouldn't rather play a version of SF64 that had music quality on the level of an ace combat game.
the gigaleak showed that they had to compress the voice acting in this game so badly that they literally sound like different people from the actual recorded voice acting.

N64 couldn't handle it and so Square delivered one of the best games of all time, if not the best. It would've been garbage in comparison on an N64 and I couldn't even care less about the fmvs. They would have had to remove so much to make it fit on N64, and it would've had been heavily censored and much more expensive. I only had Nintendo until '02 so I have no bias for Sony. I can't believe anyone actually thinks the N64 could've done it, so I have to assume this is a troll thread.
FFVII PC port came out 6-7 months later which also removed the loading times, which was the only advantage the N64 had.

Again, PS1 is loading a custom instrument set. The PC version is using the instrument set of sound card being used. All of these are examples of the PS1 and Saturn doing what is effectively MIDI but with custom instruments:
