It was ok I guess, kinda disappointed since it had good reviews and I wanted to try another ion storm game after deus ex (didn't wanna try invisible war with how panned it is, but maybe I'll give it a shot). The turn based combat and customization of the characters weapons and abilities was the most fun aspect of it, as well as it's pretty funny writing, the rest of it with world explorartion and fetch quests, not so much, especially when the worlds level designs only fluctuate from good to downright awful (dunno what they were thinking with that utterly unfunny superhero level). It's a game that's perfect for a remake honestly with how jank it is, like how in the fifinal boss I did it correctly twice and the game would just break and wouldn't complete, so I had to watch the ending on youtube, but buggy messes are expected of these old games.

One thing I forgot to mention were the cutscenes, very well produced, a lot of the shots were pretty cinematic.

it's on the backlog. I'm just so burned out though. what I hate most about games is sometimes they just aren't fun but I feel compelled to play them because they have other interesting aspects like atmosphere, music, art style, etc. even if a movie or book is bad, it's not that big of a time investment. games can be such a fucking slog though and at the end, if you didn't enjoy it, but just wanted to have an opinion about it, was it worth it?

That's true. If you play a game for 2 to 3 hours and hate it, it's best just to drop it, unless you review video games as a hobby or something.

I remember this particular game having a fanmade movie adaptation that simply edited out the gameplay and stitched the cutscenes together into as coherent a story as possible, or something like that. I dunno, I didn't ever watch it because I'd already played the game, but... if you have an interest in Anachronox, maybe you should track that down and watch it instead of slogging through the actual game, so as to save yourself a few tens of hours.

As a game, Anachronox is very very clearly half-baked. The battle mechanics are a mess that's on its way toward being something kinda cool, but that never got those last few rounds of polishing it needed. The story is generally good, but it's also explicitly left incomplete because the developers had no other choice. The world is sometimes quite ugly and tedious to get around in. I personally found it worth playing, but it's extremely flawed and you could certainly be forgiven for skipping it or just watching a video of it or whatever.

Seriously, this is what Let's Play/"longplay" video series are best used for. If you really want to experience those aesthetic aspects of a game but can't bring yourself to play it because it seems like it'll probably suck, just find somebody who recorded it on YouTube and who isn't intolerably annoying by your personal standards, and take in those aspects while you're eating breakfast or riding your exercise bike or whatever it is that you do.
