X also has the superior sound track. One of the GOATs even. If nintendo ever brings back this franchise, in a real way not retro battle royale thing, I hope they hire the band that did F Zero X again.

>gx blows it out of the water in terms of depth.
GX blows it out of the water in every fucking way imaginable. I'm a huge N64 fag, but the worship of X over GX is absolutely mind boggling to me. This is one of the series where the GCN made an absolute and complete improvement upon the prior entry, and of course, since we live in a gay and unfair world, it's the one that retards spend the most time shitting on.

The handling in X blows, the tracks are barren and nearly identical outside of skyboxes, you can't make your own vehicles, the buttrock is fucking garbage compared to the cool ambient music in GX, there's barely any content, and it lacks neat stuff like being able to make your own custom logo. The list goes on and fucking on. Every single time somebody defends this shit, their entire reasoning boils down to "b-but I like the buttrock, and uh... you can FLY LOL". Yeah, you can "fly" in X, e.g. go out of bounds by abusing the physics system to skip portions of the track. That's what X has going for it. A fucking glitch.

X is a vastly worse game than GX by every objective metric. Hell, it isn't even the best futuristic racer on its own console. Wipeout 64 absolutely dumps on that garbage. I wouldn't even call it a good racer in general. FUCK X.

I'd like to think most people just jerk off X because of muh nostalgia, but if it really boils down to corporate allegiance then that is incredibly sad. I don't know why anybody would give a fuck. Imagine caring "this office building filled with japs made the game instead of this other office building filled with japs". Mentally diseased. A good game is a good game. GX is a good game, X is not. Simple as.

I was filtered by the game being boring as fuck. I put a solid 100 hours into that shit over the years, mostly playing at a friend's house, and I always thought "why are we playing this instead of perfect dark or smash?". There were no interesting levels, no interesting design elements, just the occasional gap or boost pad or tube and a bunch of vehicles that are nearly identical outside of some being rusty chodes that suck shit to use. It's so fucking boring dude. Then I bought GX for like $10 on a complete whim in 2005 and loved it. I'm usually pretty good at putting my biases aside and appreciating why other people might enjoy something I'm not crazy about, but this is the one case where I truly do not understand. I can't imagine having the willpower to 100% this dog turd unless I was some child of divorce and my dad bought it for me before dying of a heroin overdose or something. There are so many better games of any genre, racing included, that you could play than this and yet somehow a significant number of people are crazy about it. I will never ever get it.

Easier and less visually messy, yes. I want to enjoy video games. I like games that give me the opportunity to go fast and kick ass on astounding racetracks. I want every mistake to clearly feel like something I fucked up, then have a laugh about it and try again.
Grinding for hours just to begin to comprehend how to win is more appropriate for flight sim autism. Even this thread has a rabid GXfag that will go so far as to call X a bad game in desperation to elevate his overly difficult and visually depressing target of obsession. Embarrassing.
Oh and Star Wars Racer is better than Star Wars Racer Revenge too.

How about some actual gameplay.
Here are a couple of youtube screenshots taken shortly after hitting a boost pad on a Port Town track. What a sloppy mess. Even with all the room in the world it still feels crowded. Are we racing ghosts? The 5th and 6th place might convince me we are. Was it mandatory to put a stupid texture on every hud element possible? I'll keep the easily readable gradients.

personal opinions
>x's flaws:
>physics suck. It has basically the same issues as Mario Kart 64 where lighter vehicles are disproportionately favored by the engine
>too many machines have the same stat lines for some reason
>a lot of tracks have spots where the player will just fly off at just slightly above cruising speeds.
>advanced techniques are contrary to the design of game with space flying and grinding on every rail
>X cup is basically a pointless endeavor because the tracks are so simple, yet the AI can't drive them
>A lot of the good stuff was permanently locked away to the 64DD
>master rubberbands like crazy

>GX's flaws
>tracks are very simplified. Most of them are very wide, long, multiple recovery strips
>the stats lie for every single machine in the game and the most important stats aren't even visible to the player without datamining
>a large portion of the machines are pretty much unusable
>story mode has crazy rubberbanding in a few chapters, a couple gp tracks also have pretty bad rubberbanding
>rival system is kind of worse than X for various reasons, mostly because certain AIs favor certain tracks which means the given rival of a track frequently cannot perform well because their AI doesn't 'favor' the track
>the designs of the AX racers are generally pretty lame and don't mesh well with Imamura's designs, like the four child characters they added.
>aesthetic in general can be a sticking point because it's decidedly SEGA-ish and doesn't adhere with SNES or X.

both games are still great, though.

I like F-Zero X more as well. I've got the N64 DD Expansion Kit as well and the track builder alone mogs GX IMO. I realize that most people won't get that experience unfortunately, but here's hoping Nintendo rereleases the DD stuff soon. Now that the Switch 2 has mouse controls integrated right into the packed in controllers I'm hoping it gives them more reason to rerelease Mario Paint and the Mario Artist games that make up most of the DD's library. With the internet being as robust as it is now compared to back then too they could integrate the randnet functionality more easily. In a perfect world everyone could make custom F-Zero X courses and share them online but something tells me they just won't. F-Zero X is awesome though even without the Expansion Kit but the kit really does bring it to the next level.

Have you tried listening to it on good gear? The soundstage is also thin/poorly-defined and the dynamic range is too loud/compressed.

It's not that, the arrange album sounds like a rehearsal tape, not a fully produced album. Listen to more metal that isn't video game music and you'll understand. The kind of "metal" in FZX isn't some "trve cvlt" low fi horseshit, it's trying to sound majestic and galloping, like an arena rock or even power metal album. But the production kills that vibe.
