I've only played Valis 3 (Genesis) and Valis IV (SNES). Valis 3 is really good, but I found Valis IV to be rather boring, there's not anything bad about it, but there's not anything good about it either.

Valis 1 PC Engine is by far the best game in the series.
2 is fun enough to play through, but it is an extremely mediocre game. 3 is better on Genesis in my opinion. The levels they had to cut to fit on cartridge suck, and everything just plays a bit better. Play it there. Once again, it is fun but not amazing.
Valis 4 is best on PC Engine again. This game has some really annoying things though, like accidentally getting to a boss with the wrong character and not being able to switch. It is also kind of frustrating. 1 is shoot em up like where you never want to be de-leveled, but it feels fun to master the levels so you never die. 4 feels very cheap.

Telenet games have janky at worst/mediocre at best gameplay but interesting aesthetics and plot (Valis itself has a cool, if demented, premise). Exile is my favorite in this regard, but most of their library is well worth checking out for that cool, obscure 90s anime vibe that we'll never get again in any medium.

You played the last game in the series first. This is a remake of 1 that they made after Valis 4. The "sequels" are going to seem really jank compared to this.
Valis 1 on Genesis is the real first game in the TG16 Valis 2-4 series.

All the home computer versions I've played have been just curiosities. Fast paced action platformers on systems that can't smoothly scroll a screen or update fast enough to smoothly move a sprite around. Not fun.
The home computer versions of Valis 2 have a vastly superior soundtrack to the PC Engine CD version, though, so there's that. No clue why they changed it.

You think that boss is bad, wait until later. That boss at least can be reliably beaten once you understand it. Make sure you are using the fight character for each boss. This can be hard because many levels randomly transition to the boss without warning. They usually go from basically impossible to entirely beatable when you do. And yes, 4 feels very unfair. 1 remake is hard, but rewarding to master. 4 doesn't feel that way.
Also, great to have a thread where people are actually discussing games. Board is getting really bad lately, thanks OP.

>1 remake is hard, but rewarding to master. 4 doesn't feel that way.
True, 3 had its absolute bullshit moments but it's also rewarding like 1. Then 2 was just weird, the entire game was easy except for level 5, that futuristic base level reminiscent of Raf World/Journey to Silius
Overall I'm not sure if it's even possible for me to beat Valis 4 but I kinda like the atmosphere

In my opinion;
1 on PC Engine CD and 3 on Genesis are great games.
2 on PC Engine CD and Genesis (SD Valis is another remake) are simplistic but fun. They'd be considered good games if they were on NES, I think.
1 on Genesis is kusoge. Hitboxes are so bad you can never tell if the sound confirmations just didn't play or your shot just went through them. Truly terrible. And yes, I've beaten it a couple times. I still don't know how to beat the rival fight other than luck.
Other games I haven't completed. Both versions of 4 are frustrating. I gave up before beating either of them, so I can't really give them a fair grade of quality. Home computer games are kind of a mess. Maybe x68000 is better, since it is a much more powerful platform. I only tried the PC88 and MSX versions. Check out the sound tests, especially for the PC88 versions, though. Best tunes in the series.

The games were not made in the same order on the PC-Engine. I believe 1 was made after 3, so they had more programming experience and game design experience than they did with 2 which was made in the early days of the PCE. The games are alright, I liked them enough, but acknowledge they are mid yet still special to me as they had were charming to me in my youth.

Yes, I've heard that Super Valis is different enough from the PCE game to warrant a playthrough, I think I'm going to play it next and then also SD Valis.
You know, watching gameplay vids of 4 now that I've beaten it, the bosses really are complete fucking bullshit. I can beat even the last level pretty much without dying now, I just got really good at the game, but the bosses? They really are just poorly designed, especially the last one. Having played a lot of Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, I still wanted more, so they fit the bill well enough. Especially on PCE where they didn't appear until later. If anything, it did show off some cool pixel art cutscenes that I really liked to stand apart until then.

This. After dying you could get at least one upgrade to the whip, which is your only main weapon. In Valis you've got different main weapons, but once you have it downgraded after losing a life, you either can switch to a inferior one or be stuck with none at all. This is such a major flaw.

Oh, by the way, initially Yuuko wasn't supposed to be this cheerful cute schoolgirl, but a female delinquent instead. Pic related. Not gona lie, it would've been much more interesting than "innocent gal gets a magical sword and a bikini armor" trope all over again.
