I just beat the PCE remake of Valis 1, it's alright I guess. Do you guys like this series? Gonna try 2 now
>Valis thread
you are now reminded of the existence of Valis X, the last new game in the Valis series
>>11883186 (OP)'It's alright' you guess?! Did you not notice the upskirt view every time she jumps?
I personally enjoy them and enjoy the music, I wish I had a PCE CD at the moment but I don't miss playing valis 1-4
currently own 3 on the genesis
>>11883189>>11883236I'll try it if I like the PCE games, I know what it is though lmao.
>>11883192I did notice that, nice detail
This was the 16-bit equivalent of moviegames
I've only played Valis 3 (Genesis) and Valis IV (SNES). Valis 3 is really good, but I found Valis IV to be rather boring, there's not anything bad about it, but there's not anything good about it either.
Valis 1 PC Engine is by far the best game in the series.
2 is fun enough to play through, but it is an extremely mediocre game. 3 is better on Genesis in my opinion. The levels they had to cut to fit on cartridge suck, and everything just plays a bit better. Play it there. Once again, it is fun but not amazing.
Valis 4 is best on PC Engine again. This game has some really annoying things though, like accidentally getting to a boss with the wrong character and not being able to switch. It is also kind of frustrating. 1 is shoot em up like where you never want to be de-leveled, but it feels fun to master the levels so you never die. 4 feels very cheap.
>>11883301Valis combat is boring like why a sword when it's just shooting projectiles? It ruins my immersion, they could've just given her a gun.
>>11883318Thanks man, so 3 on the Genesis instead of PCE? I'll keep that in mind

>>11883318What about the cinema screens?
Also one more thing, while I was playing Valis it made me think of pic related. And what do you know, googled it and it's also made by Telenet Japan. Never beat it though
>>11883334There's more there on PC Engine, but the Genesis has full screen images, so honestly better cutscenes than 2 on PC Engine has.
Well this was pretty damn disappointing, hopefully 3 is better
Bro what the fuck is this lmao, fuck this level
Decided to play the PCE version first and then try the Genesis one later
>crap game
booo
>crap game + hot anime girl
:O
THIS LEVEL JUST DOESN'T END WHAT THE FUCK, UNIRONICALLY WHAT WERE THEY THINKING
>>11883339Telenet games have janky at worst/mediocre at best gameplay but interesting aesthetics and plot (Valis itself has a cool, if demented, premise). Exile is my favorite in this regard, but most of their library is well worth checking out for that cool, obscure 90s anime vibe that we'll never get again in any medium.
These games deserve remakes
>b-b-but
Shut up
Also if they add porn to it, even better
>>11883985Why? They remain fun as they are. And Valis 2 already got a SD remake (kek).
>>11883186 (OP)>Gonna try 2 nowYou played the last game in the series first. This is a remake of 1 that they made after Valis 4. The "sequels" are going to seem really jank compared to this.
Valis 1 on Genesis is the real first game in the TG16 Valis 2-4 series.
>>11883930We warned you. That level (or specifically, about 90% of it) is one of the cuts on Genesis.
>>11883983Exile has such a batshit plot that it seems intriguing at a glance but the narrative is actually nonsensical and the gameplay is hot garbage.
Valis series is interesting in how there are several games called Valis 1 and Valis II for different platforms and most of them have very little in common with each other. You get only half of the picture if you stick to only PCE/MD/SFC games.
>>11884879All the home computer versions I've played have been just curiosities. Fast paced action platformers on systems that can't smoothly scroll a screen or update fast enough to smoothly move a sprite around. Not fun.
The home computer versions of Valis 2 have a vastly superior soundtrack to the PC Engine CD version, though, so there's that. No clue why they changed it.
>>11884864The ice level and its boss were even worse. Brutal fucking game man but overall I liked it as much as 1. I had to look up a longplay for 2-3 bosses though, didn't know that the other two girls were more or less mandatory to progress at times. Please tell me 4 is easier...
>>11884669To be honest 3 wasn't jankier than 1 except for the fact that you have to press down+RUN to slide, fuck that shit. It's 2 that's borderline bad, still has its charm though
>>11884879Yeah I know but the previous poster is right. I can tolerate games like Ys on those old computers but not platformers, shit just looks unplayable to me
>>11884012i think the chibi one is kinda fun, in a bad way
they named it syd of valis because the localizers didnt know wtf a "SD" was supposed to be, and that was the only letters they could read on the cover
its a really wonky run and gun
>>11883983>Telenet Japan's North American subsidiary, Renovation Products, was acquired by Sega of America in 1993.[2] With debt of ¥1 billion, the company ceased operating in late September 2007 and closed its doors on October 25.>debt of ¥1 billionLame.
>>11885582Sunsoft buying out all of Telenet's IPs after that is bizarre as fuck. Also Sunsoft apparently still exists (???)
>Ufouria: The Saga 2 is a 2024 platformer developed and published by Sunsoft>a 2024 platformer>developed and published by Sunsoft
>>11885592>SunsoftReminder that Sunsoft, or rather its parent, was the only Japanese game company to donate money to the Israel after 10/7, look it up, it's real.
>>11883186 (OP)As a panty shot enthusiast, I loved the PCE version. It's just constant flashes of white cotton from beginning to end.
The rest of the games were pretty good too.
Now this one feels like a legitimate fucking torture to play, I'm only on act 2 and it's just infuriating
>upgrade weapon to level 5
>die ONCE because shit just appears out of nowhere and knocks you off
>weapon back to level 1, not after a continue but after just one death
>boss now impossible
Should've just got rid of the life system altogether, great game
Another boss another crapshoot, I seriously don't get how I'm supposed to know what attack she's going to use. Shit's ridiculous
>>11887587You think that boss is bad, wait until later. That boss at least can be reliably beaten once you understand it. Make sure you are using the fight character for each boss. This can be hard because many levels randomly transition to the boss without warning. They usually go from basically impossible to entirely beatable when you do. And yes, 4 feels very unfair. 1 remake is hard, but rewarding to master. 4 doesn't feel that way.
Also, great to have a thread where people are actually discussing games. Board is getting really bad lately, thanks OP.
>>11887859No problem man, thank you too. I just beat stage 7, game's just ridiculously hard. Also I'm an idiot and apparently 2-4 all have saves, I thought you had to beat all of em in one sitting. Well that's what I did with 2 and 3 anyway.
>1 remake is hard, but rewarding to master. 4 doesn't feel that way.True, 3 had its absolute bullshit moments but it's also rewarding like 1. Then 2 was just weird, the entire game was easy except for level 5, that futuristic base level reminiscent of Raf World/Journey to Silius
Overall I'm not sure if it's even possible for me to beat Valis 4 but I kinda like the atmosphere
Okay I beat stage 8 and I just fucking can't anymore I swear. Apparently I'm on the last stage and I need to take a break
How many HP does the final boss have? Ahh he is immortal got it, so it's basically unbeatable, I guess I reached the ending, he just doesn't die
? He doesn't die? I legit don't... wtf?
Beat that fucker. Genuinely one of the hardest games I've ever beaten
>>11884669>Valis 1 on Genesis is the real first game in the TG16 Valis 2-4 series.IIRC, Valis 1 on Genesis is a downgraded port of PCE Valis 1 (and thus, the actual last game)
>>11888637It isn't. It came out around the same time as 3. It is also really bad. Bad animations and hitboxes.
>>11888637>>11888718It came out after 4, just a few months before the PCE remake so no idea what that anon meant by 'the real first game' honestly
In my opinion;
1 on PC Engine CD and 3 on Genesis are great games.
2 on PC Engine CD and Genesis (SD Valis is another remake) are simplistic but fun. They'd be considered good games if they were on NES, I think.
1 on Genesis is kusoge. Hitboxes are so bad you can never tell if the sound confirmations just didn't play or your shot just went through them. Truly terrible. And yes, I've beaten it a couple times. I still don't know how to beat the rival fight other than luck.
Other games I haven't completed. Both versions of 4 are frustrating. I gave up before beating either of them, so I can't really give them a fair grade of quality. Home computer games are kind of a mess. Maybe x68000 is better, since it is a much more powerful platform. I only tried the PC88 and MSX versions. Check out the sound tests, especially for the PC88 versions, though. Best tunes in the series.

>>11883186 (OP)The games were not made in the same order on the PC-Engine. I believe 1 was made after 3, so they had more programming experience and game design experience than they did with 2 which was made in the early days of the PCE. The games are alright, I liked them enough, but acknowledge they are mid yet still special to me as they had were charming to me in my youth.
>>11889061Its kind of wild that for all the games we never got over here, they damn well made sure we got every single Valis game.
>>11889053>Both versions of 4 are frustratingYes, I've heard that Super Valis is different enough from the PCE game to warrant a playthrough, I think I'm going to play it next and then also SD Valis.
You know, watching gameplay vids of 4 now that I've beaten it, the bosses really are complete fucking bullshit. I can beat even the last level pretty much without dying now, I just got really good at the game, but the bosses? They really are just poorly designed, especially the last one. I feel like I defeated almost all of them by sheer luck
>>11889061Yeah gameplay-wise they are kinda just average action platformers

>>11887379i wonder if there is a pixiv sauce or if that old
>>11889304It did have some interest on PC platforms first. While pretty clunky and janky, they did have charm that would lead to sales. So it wasn't wrong going with the data.
>>11890018Having played a lot of Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, I still wanted more, so they fit the bill well enough. Especially on PCE where they didn't appear until later. If anything, it did show off some cool pixel art cutscenes that I really liked to stand apart until then.
Yuko is underrated skinny waifu material.
>>11887571This is the worst thing about these games. All four mainline entries by which I mean PCE and MD versions have one and the same flaw. It's a worse version of the "Gradius syndrome", belive or not. I like the platforming and combat, but once lose a life, you're fucked for good. Bad game design, right here.
Also posting some Yuuko
So I swore that Valis was also on PC98, and sure enough, despite it being listed everywhere as a PC88 game, there is a PC98 version, with better sound and framerate, on archive. Still kind of rough, but the computer version you should try.
I wanted to play through some MSX RPGs but honestly the scrolling in them ruins the entire experience, very blocky scrolling and only scrolls like half the screen at a time so you get that hideous tearing effect...
>>118910471 and 4 also take half of your HP bar away after losing a life, I honestly don't understand the logic behind this but maybe they wanted to master each level to be able to beat its boss
>>11892146>they wantedmeant they wanted (You) to master each level obviously
>>11891047>>11887571I mean Castlevania does this too but admittedly the devs made sure that you upgraded back almost immediately
>>11883331>anime games that actually kept the anime box art in the US releaserare
>>11893000>the devs made sure that you upgraded back almost immediatelyThis. After dying you could get at least one upgrade to the whip, which is your only main weapon. In Valis you've got different main weapons, but once you have it downgraded after losing a life, you either can switch to a inferior one or be stuck with none at all. This is such a major flaw.
Oh, by the way, initially Yuuko wasn't supposed to be this cheerful cute schoolgirl, but a female delinquent instead. Pic related. Not gona lie, it would've been much more interesting than "innocent gal gets a magical sword and a bikini armor" trope all over again.
