Was the PS2 originally planned to have one memory card per game, with each game coming with a corresponding memory card already inside the case?
Obviously it wouldn't be 8 MB of memory, but it doesn't make sense that every original PS2 case had a memory card slot.

There’s this thing people used to do back then where they’d take a game over to a friend’s house so they could play together in the same room. And they’d bring their memory card containing all their unlocked content, custom characters, custom settings, etc. Crazy, right?

That slot is there so that that space on the case won't be completely hollow.

Then why didn't PS1 cases also have a memory card holder?

I think part of the reason it was there was so that you COULD use it if you wanted to, even if not everyone would, but also because of what >>11883617 said.
It makes the case more structurally solid and rigid at the same time.

Could potentially also have been an artifact from PSX times, where some games would take up shitloads of blocks on a card (Diablo, Simcity 2000, etc), so someone might find themselves wanting to get a separate card just for such a game.
In such a case, pairing that card with the game disc in the same case would be convenient.

>>11883614
This too. The benefits were many.

>>11883631
Because they were almost always conventional CD style jewel cases where there would be no such space.

Early American PSX games came in long boxes. There were a lot of extra longboxes made in America because people expected the Sega CD to sell better than it did so Sony got them for cheap.

Early PSX games were released in those taller cases, they switched to jewel style rather quickly. The same goes for the Saturn, I have some Saturn games in the older large case format, pretty sure SEGA stuck with that case style for longer before switching to jewel cases.

PS1 cases (After they quickly switched from those big ones) were just CD cases, PS2 cases were just slightly modified DVD cases. Likely on purpose since since they were advertised as also functioning as a CD and DVD player as a key feature.

I've never seen any US Saturn games in jewel cases outside of special exceptions. I think only the Japanese Saturn games used regular jewel cases. Europe had the long boxes too, only they were cardboard.

japanese saturn games either used jewel cases, double/triple/quadriple jewel cases (the ones with a middle section that could hold 0/1/2 discs and two fold out standard jewel case backs), or, worst case scenario, 12mm jewel cases for titles with very thick booklets. Standard jewel case is 10.4mm. Those 12mm jewel cases are goddamn impossible to find replacements for, the only thing you can do is buy used copies of Super Robot Wars (the cheapest and most plentiful game with that case).

Really they should've just had multiplayer modes start off with everything unlocked. Would've saved us a lot of trouble and improved millions of sleepovers.

Another note is that Japanese players tended to use way more memory cards and have them all labeled and never delete shit.

Of all the retarded threads on here over the past 2 years or so, this is probably among the most retarded, though it has to compete with the "Why didn't nintendo sue capcom for putting NES games on the Playstation?" thread
