what i remember about this is you can craft a spell that does max non-elemental damage that costs 1 MP to trivialize the entire game

You CAN break the game with spells you write yourself, but every JRPG comes pre-broken for your convenience anyhow so the freedom to do that ends up being much more of a good feature than a flaw. If you experiment on your own and don't cheat with guides then you're very unlikely to do something like that by accident. It's a generally good system, though it could certainly be better.

The deal is that it's one of the best JRPGs on the platform, and so depending on your stance toward JRPGs it is either one of the very best games of any sort on the platform, or a pretty but ultimately irredeemable pile of fluff and garbage, or potentially anything in between. Play it if you want, I guess?
