Well, I've never played any Dragon Quest except 8.... but the only one of those characters that doesn't look retarded or generic is 4. So I'll go with 4

Loved DQ4 on NES (played it on emulator back around 99, I’m not *that* old). The different stories and even gameplay for each chapter really helped bringing to life your companions. A shame the DS remake ruined the exploration.

With the exception of 8 the series really goes downhill after V and also I believe this was the last game to be developed by Chunsoft. Favorite game is definitely 4 on the NES
