Are the ps2 monster hunter games good/worth playing?

What content do you miss out on if you play by yourself?

I have watched some reviews of 1 and it seems kind of...bad? Bad controls, grindy, not much singleplayer content.

Does 2 use analog stick for combat or buttons? How is its singeplayer?

Meh, not really worth playing until they hit the psp and 3ds which is not retro

From what other anons have told me
-some of the difficulty is broken as they hadn't quite figured out the balancing at that point
-leans a lot harder into the sim aspect (gathering, fishing, and such) so your time will be spent a big more on the mundane
-wonky controls that some people prefer, though its few

Still, apparently that particular games lore is referenced quite a bit in the series.

Just play freedom unite on the PSP.
That said, the originals do have a distinct feeling to them. Slower and more deliberate, but punishing. If you feel like 3 is too easy and not punishing after playing FU and are ok with fighting the same monsters you already have, only then play 1 or Dos.
Dos is a nice curiosity if you're really into the roleplaying and aren't bothered by having to plan out gathering and hunting based on seasonal availability of item spawns and monsters. But if this would annoy you at all, avoid it.

Dos is one of my favourite RPGs of all time, but its a very acquired taste. If you are only looking to play more conventional Monster Hunter but in an older flavour, probably should try Freedom Unite.
