Engineering deck is the biggest difficulty spike I've ever experienced in a game. What were they thinking?

I had such a hard time with engineering first time I played SS2. Later on when I replayed as a psionic, it was incredibly easy since I could just activate the agility powerup, run up to bots and then run away quickly enough to get out of the blast radius.

radiation is not dangerous at all. it just generates a sense of irrational panic. completely ignore the radiation and you'll be fine

The invisible spiders is the legit reason for
>What were they thinking?
not the mid-game level.
I used Navy in my first playthrough and my biggest gripe was that the infinitely spawning hybrids immediately wrecked my lovingly hacked turrets, that's all. I knew beforehand that the glitched never-breaking weapons existed, though.

It's easy if you already knew ahead of time what to avoid like lurking this board and reading all the common traps. The game is full of softlocks.

>>11886562
Thief has a way steeper learning curve. System Shock 2 is just full of traps like useless abilities. If someone told you ahead of time one or two of the traps SS2 is trivially easy, but that wont help you in Thief.

The game tells you flat out "don't invest these points into anything but what you're told to." one time and you decided to invest into what you weren't supposed to lol.

>>11887221
nta, i tried doing that when i learned that ss2 and thief are basically the same game but it feels like hiding isn't efficient at all in ss2
hiding in shadows barely changes how visible you are to enemies, but sneaking does seem to work fine at least

That's a hardlock and not what I'm talking about. The game is full of ways you can screw yourself and make it 100x harder. If you read about the game ahead of time, or even played other immersive sims, then they're easy to avoid.

>getting softlocked in System Shock 2
How? These are the only things I can even think of

>the required hack vending machine
You have to simultaneously have no hacking, go out of your way to spend the cyber modules on something else, have no ICE picks or the tier4 psi hack spell, and also have no backup saves after you realize you fucked up.

>the radiation pool in the body of the many
Is there anyone on the planet who will go past the point of no return into the final dungeon without stocked up to the tits in supplies?

>running out of ammo or intact guns or psi in the early parts and not being able to get past all the turrets on deck 1 or something
Theoretically if this happens you could still go melee them with the wrench, and probably repeatedly die and get reconstructed while doing that, and in the absolute worst case if you run out of nanites to get reconstructed you could go farm more from the hybrid respawns on deck 2.

>having no way to drop the final bosses shields
>tossing a key item somewhere and losing it
You'd have to go out of your way to fuck yourself over on purpose that badly.

This. Body of the Many is unfun and kind of frustrating but not difficult at all. You're showered to piss with anti annelid ammo and have enough nanites to buy a trillion med kits which are activated by the push of a button.

Also anybody wasting annelid shots on eggs is retarded. Shotgun shells are the only way to go for those since respawning shotgun hybrids are guaranteed to have at least one.

I went into this game relatively blind (I knew that repair is a useless skill and some people complain of softlocking) but came out ok. By the time I was in the body of the Many, I had picked up so many unused grenades I had enough to clear that section using the launcher alone.

I went into this mostly blind for "impossible", focusing hard on standard weapons and research. I think the turrets gave me a harder time over any of the enemies, and being autistic about ammo counts paid off when I made it to the Many. Overall a good time.

in the unpatched game, hacking the machine before you were told to was a genuine softlock, as it would never spawn the Sympathetic Resonator.

If you want to do a heavily/only psi build, get improved hypo power and reduced shop prices for O/S upgrades, and use an ice-pick or the level 4 psi-hacking power on the replicator specifically in the rectangular donut shaped Deck 1 main elevator room to stack maximum psi point per money spent efficiency (minmaxing this hard probably isn't necessary but feels good)

Put points into agility. Combined with the agility and melee damage buffs you'll be able to outrun enemies, dodge their attacks and one hit them with the crystal shard.

I almost went hacking instead of research. I don't know what stuff I'm missing due to no hacks but I'm really glad I didn't miss out on the items and descriptions you get from research. I also had some fun figuring out and grabbing the chemicals.
