Why was this blood type thing so prominent? I understand the context now but apparently what sparked it was just some Japanese book in the 70s rather than a longstanding pseudoscientific personality theory. Was it super-popular over there to the point video games referencing it was something that was treated as an automatic understanding by the audience?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that it's very popular in Japan, supposedly because the Japanese population is more evenly divided between all four blood types. So it makes more sense to treat it like astrological signs or something.

Yeah, I know they haven't really abandoned it, but the ubiquity of it is kind of surprising given it sounds like a niche thing.

Useful information for a tournament of fierce fighters since a blood transfusion might be necessary.

I dunno man, if someone lost enough blood to need a transfusion from blunt force trauma then they probably have severe brain damage anyways

Blood type is a big thing in East Asian countries. Not knowing your blood type is like not knowing your weight or height.

Well there's a dude who fights with claws. Maybe there's a whole specialized blood transfusion team on call solely because of him. Hmm although Blanka does bite people a lot, there's also that. And Chun-Li probably causes a few near-fatal nosebleeds among spectators when she fights in Japan

What if instead of being struck in the head the opponent just punches their elbows over and over again? Did you even think of that? I bet you didn't.

It's still popular, but Japan (and especially Gen Z in Japan) is starting to embrace MBTI as an alternative. Look forward to future games telling you that Ryu is an INFJ or Leon is an ISFP.

Ryu's ki counteracts gravity a bit. He does weigh 150 lbs, but his mass is greater than yours. If you held enough helium balloons you could weigh 120 lbs. It's like that.

Why do you think that? It isn't. Other cultures differ from your own. This isn't fucking complicated.

Because it's not entirely cultural, it's like new age-type thinking. It's not upholding a longstanding belief or cultural understanding. It was conceptualized in the early 20th century but only got mainstream recognition by 1970 when it was published as a thesis. By the time of SF2 its place as an attribute in social interaction was barely 20 years old.

That's true but they are taking it so seriously as if blood types were known for thousands of years and not just 150.

Yeah each blood type is thought to have different personality traits associated with them. Blood type 0 is often called The Warrior, type A The Farmer, type B The Hunter and type AB The Humanist.

The Final Fantasy wiki actually has a summation of the traits of each type.

They should have had a fighter that had a blood type of HIV+, which caused the victor to gradually become weaker and weaker during the tournament due to exposure and infection.
I know it's not a real disease these days, and you can be infected and have unprotected homosexual sex with others and it is AOK, but back in the day, it was a death sentence and an incurable disease.

How would knowing the fighters' blood types help the spectators when they need a blood transfusion?
