How does this shit even work? You just play games right from the HDD instead of the optical drive? Been thinking about getting into PS2 again but I got soured on the whole thing after going through three consoles with cursed ribbon cables. Honestly PCSX2 is so good at this point that it would have to be peg-in-hole baby simple for me to bother with real hardware again.

i used to have a ps2 and sometimes i'm tempted to buy this dude's ssd-upgraded ps2 rig, but then i remember that i like playing black at 60fps, or not bothering with extremely long save-die-reload etc processes

some games are brutal regarding the above

if i'm in an unwinnable battle in a jrpg, i don't want to wait 5 working days to be able to restart the dungeon or whatever

Not that anon, but OPL has an option called "Cache game list". Once you finish adding all the games that you want, you turn that on and opl will create a file with the names of all the games. From then on, every time you boot your console, OPL will load almost instantly regardless of the size. The only downsize is that if you want to add games later, you won't see them on your list until you delete that file but it's not a hard process.

as for replacements. dunno where you are from so i can't give you a recommendation of where to buy.
but i can tell you to look for fuses rated for 2 amps and the same or more voltage (but not that much, 16v for the 12v fuse should be fine. mostly size concerns) than the ones installed.
so 12v 2 amps and 5v 2amps.

So basically an ide is the only way? If someone can get a working ide for PS2/ps1 games on a PS2, it'd sell. PS1 doesn't have a good solution either. What a cluster fuck. I usually just burn PS1 games and mod PS1s. PS1 replacement lasers are also available, but having an ide of some kind seems like it should've happened already. PS1 support on both ps1 and PS2 is lacking more than Xbox emulation. Why hasn't some team of hyper autists figured this out yet?

They added a Vulkan LLE renderer (paraLLEl-GS) that allows you to upscale some games like Ridge Racer 5 without any visual glitches (something PCSX2 can't do for now), so at least they're working on it

Someone took a look at Redump data and the average PS2 game is 2.348 GB
Even if you'd round it up to 3 GB, just 512 GB would still give you 171 games which I'm pretty sure would need you to start including some less than stellar games to fill the HDD
17.741 TB is every single release, including every single region, re-release and revision of every single game
So yeah, as you said, unless you suffer from some extreme form of crippling autism, hoarding 16 TB of PS2 games is just retarded

I still have 7 working PS2 consoles with laser still going, so thereโ€™s that. Plus I mostly play PS1 games and they pretty much need to be played from disc.

In reality I do use mods though, but MMCE cards are fine for most PS2 games and then Iโ€™ll just use disc for the few games where FMVโ€™s stutter.

tho tbf i did it like 15-20yrs ago

i still remember how, too. you had to beat the first mission of 007 agent under fire, then right at the exact moment that the second level was still loading, you had to use a "key" made out of a cut up credit card, and use that to unhook and open the disc tray, then put the freemcboot disc in, and all before the game froze/loaded the next level.
absolutely maniacal. i remember it took me like a dozen attempts, and you had to start the whole mission over every time if it froze

Just my luck. the main PS2 modding thread died after I asked something.

I tried my shit audio-video cables on a flatscreen but the image is fucked up, I hope it's just the cables being old and rusty.
"Whats a good option for connecting my Slim PS2 to a modern TV that will not break the bank? This TV's only got HDMI in and some optical port."
I'm looking at picrel. How bad can it be? It's $7. It's a 50 inch tv, lol.

I performed the following test just now:
PCSX2 and Retroarch-LRPS2 open simultaneously. splitscreen. both receiving input.
Ape Escape 3 running. pressing up using the dpad in the pause menu.
Recording my screen at 120fps
when i go frame by frame, LRPS2 is 1 frame faster rarely, but 3/4th of the time, they are identical.
so it seems to me PCSX2 and LRPS2 have basically identical input latency

don't get those.
those take composite video. i believe you can unplug the cable from the hdmi conector and reveals a 4 pole 3.5mm jack. so at least you can use it with anything that outputs composite video if you get the correct cables.
you want something like pic related.
these take component or rgb and output 1080p.

also, LRPS2 had 5 more frames of audio delay, as opposed to PCSX2.
maybe my retroarch settings are just configured completely retarded, but you can check for yourself, all you need is a screenrecorder and a videoplayer that can go frame by frame

it offers the disadvantage of dying early because ps2 doesn't do trim.
you don't need extra speed because you want to limit it to dvd read speeds anyway to avoid glitches.

nahh, im going to make a mess. guess they will just sit as furniture forever, is really sad how this little cute machines cant be put to use because nobody is selling or making reliable brand new laser assemblys.

only hope is someone making an FPGA or Raspberry solution ala Picobot on the GCube. Its the only reason why i use my modded PS3 for PS1 games.

after i posted those videos i got my hands on the schematics and it doesn't look as difficult as i thought.
the chip you need to solder to has big legs and the other points are far apart from each other.
it is tedious though, since you need to make a lot of connections.
i would try it if i had a psone.

assemble enough to test and measure the voltage going through the fuses and connector.
if all is good, it would narrow down the issue to the network adapter itself. as you initially suspected.
but i still find it too much of a coincidence to have 2 network adapters that partially work.
at that point i would start to suspect the ethernet cable or the device you are connecting it to too.

Yeah I'm really baffled that everything works besides the ethernet port itself. It's either just a symptom of the dirty motherboard if I'm exceptionally lucky or just a really shitty coincidence that both network adapters have faulty ethernet ports if I'm unlucky. I'm gonna try connecting it to another wifi extender and see if I have the same problem there too.

how exactly are you checking the network?
the ps2 doesn't initializes the network until something tries to use it.
don't know if this would be the best way to tell.
but you can try using the official ps2 network adapter start-up disc.
https://archive.org/details/PlayStation_2_Network_Adaptor_Start-Up_Disc_SCUS_97097_Sony_Computer_Entertainme
you can launch it by any means (except smb or udpbd, that you cannot use anyway).
i used it once to setup a config to use with time splitters future perfect.

what >>11891175 said except because it wont write to the SSD anyway it wont die early because it doesnt need to TRIM if theres no writing happening.
Advantage is that an SSD uses less power usually, and less moving parts means it dies less soon.

every game copied is a write.
if you use opl, you write to the hdd management partition.
if you copy art to display in opl, you write.
if you use vmc, you write.
if you use popstarter, you write.
there is no avoiding it.

I've only bought a few things from them and it was hit or miss. The dreamcast component cable was really bad (green lines all over the screen) but the standalone RGB to component converter was pretty good for the price.

Piggy backing on this since it doesn't deserve its own thread

Why does my PS2 make a buzzing noise when there is no audio? Bad cables?

Also, do you guys think a clear blue controller would look good with a black PS2?

Thanks

Tbh, there is a lot of shitty PS2 games that you don't need to play. I also find that having an HDD in my PS2 makes me spend more time thinking about playing different games and downloading them vs actually playing them.

After set up yeah, basically.

Here is a guide on setting up an HDD:

If you want games, I can't help you there.

On an unrelated note, here's an encrypted string with a racist password.

forgot to add.
to copy games you can use basically any hdl installer.
personally, i like hdl dump helper gui. it doesn't install opl launcher or the icons, but i do that manually since when i install something i do 1 or 2 games at a time through network. so it doesn't bother me.

also, with browser 2.0 you are still using opl as your backend to launch games, but it's all hidden.
this is still convenient because for problem games you can just launch opl and set the necessary modes for your games and when you launch them through browser 2.0 it will use them.

then getting rid of freehdboot will restore the standard boot up sequence but nothing much will change other than the way you launch games.
since you still use opl as explained >>11893695

dunno, probably kh1 vanilla. most of the extras of final mix are tedious boss battles with millions of health bars that can kill you in 2 hits. not fun stuff.
any fun suprise games?
hardly anything on ps2 is a hidden gem anymore. but if anything, i would say radiata stories is lesser known.
i'm yet to play it properly, but i started it the other day to try it out and i found it pretty fun.
will get to it once i finish my other appointments.
