I desperately need a game that is specifically like Shenmue 2. I have searched high and low for years and just have not found anything like it. I am specifically looking for a game where it's more focused on exploring a detailed world, entering random shops and buildings for no other reason than to just look around and talk to people rather than any actual type of traditional gameplay. Immersion should be the games first adjective and it should be a 3D game needless to say. Nothing I have found has ever even come close. No, Yakuza isn't anything like Shenmue so please I really don't need to hear about how it's so much better(I enjoy Yakuza and have played them all anyway).

THIS ISNT A THREAD TO DISCUSS SHENMUE. I just want to find a game that's similar to it, I'm hoping someone here has a game I overlooked.

There's non, faggot. That's why niggers used to loved it. Perhaps that David Bowie game could help you with that itch.

Somehow Shenmue 3 isnt anything like the original games. It completely misunderstood what the original games were, or maybe just didn't have a big enough budget. Probably both.

I tried Omikron but just couldn't get into it. It starts out promising with that opening city but once you try to get into the actual game its a complete piece of shit.

I mean, old PC adventure games are the genre for this.
If you need specifically something in 3D with high production values, I dunno. Gabriel Knight 3? One of the later Broken Sword games?
I could throw in an obligatory Deus Ex recommendation.
There's also Animal Crossing and Chulip, I guess.

There's also newer stuff you might want to look into, but that's not the topic for this board.

There's no retro game like Shenmue 1&2. If you already played Yakuza, the only rec I can think about is Sleeping Dogs.

Thanks for the recommendations, Gabriel Knight 3 looks interesting I will check it out.

I have played Animal Crossing and Chulip, I can see why you would recommend them but I would definitely say those lack the important immersion element that makes Shenmue such a standout.

Mizzurna Falls is a proto-Shenmue masterpiece on PS1, with an open explorable world and a day/night cycle framing the story progression. It's inevitably gonna feel smaller in scope than Shenmue 2 (anything will), but mostly from having no minigames or collectibles as extra padding. The core gameplay is solving a murder mystery by gathering information, exploring, experimenting. Everyone once in a while you'll be surprised by a chase sequence, fight, stealth, navigating an area in the dark, and many other little changes in gameplay to keep you interested. Oh, you also have a car.

It's not for the faint of heart, but since you enjoy Shenmue I'm gonna assume you're ready for a slow-burn adventure game like this. Many people will tell you it's impossible to hit all the time-specific events and get a good ending without a guide, but if you reload saves anytime you seem to hit a dead end it's actually very doable. The game will breadcrumb you to the very end if you pay attention and/or take notes.

Bully and Dead Rising 1-2 are third person videogames that have small, but detailed and comfy open worlds you could explore at your leisure(school + town in Bully, mall in Dead Rising, casino mall in Dead Rising 2), they also have ingame clock, emphasis on close quarters combat and many side-activities.

Worlds in those games reminded me of Shenmue, though their gameplay in general is pretty different.

Little Big Adventure 2. Kinda/sorta has that "go anywhere, do whatever you want" angle to it. First time around it's magical. And goes without saying, but play without a guide/walkthrough - otherwise it's an extremely short game.

the thing I like about shenmue 1, that even shenmue 2 began to lose, is the small town atmosphere, where you recognize every NPC when you walk around. the only other game i know that replicates this is Mizurna Falls.I wish there were many new games like this.

Twinsens Odysee 2 seems similar from what I remember
Realms of the Haunting feels like it in the architecture in a way
Normality feels like Shenmue is what they were going for but they were limited with the technology of 1996, pretty amazing to think Shenmue was only 4 years later while now thats how long dlc takes to get updated now.
I think I like it for the same reason as you, being a highly detail oriented game, around this time I use to like making games do weird camera angles so I could get a really close look at the objects in games, due to being handcrafted and the low resolution you always felt like there was hidden detail waiting to be found just out of reach.

ROOMMANIA#203
Rental Hero is more missions in a town though and Roommania is just a room but super immersive.
Then, if RPGs are okay, obviously Persona, Tokyo Xanadu, Blue Reflection, etc.

Try Panzer Dragoon Saga. It's a cookie cutter JRPG and the world is very small on account of being a Saturn game, but god damn it is chock full of detail and you can just go into places and inspect every small detail there is. You can even do it twice, once from afar, once from closer (important for things like listening to conversations, if you get close, people may tell you to fuck off but from a distance you can overhear a few things).

>Rental Hero
It's Rent-a-hero, and interestingly it's an early AM2 RPG remade for Dreamcast, then ported to Xbox. On the Xbox it was meant to have an english release, but they couldn't find a publisher or something and it got canned. Fortunately a near complete version got leaked, so you can play it in english on xbox.

It even has Segata Sanshiro in a cameo role, he is your mentor who teaches you new moves. Which is another link to Shenmue (Ryo's dad was voiced by the same actor who plays Segata Sanshiro).

OP here. Not to insult everyone that was kind enough to leave game suggestions for me, I unfortunately have played almost all of these, but also I think this thread just proves to me that very few people truly understand the appeal of Shenmue. I guess that's why it bombed back in the day.

Mizzurna Falls and Rent-a-Hero No. 1 are probably the closest game to Shenmue that have been recommended in this thread. Even then, they aren't fully on the same scale, but they are close enough. I have played both, great games. Most of these other games though really don't have the same appeal, or are played from a non-traditional third person camera angle that immediately makes the same level of immersion impossible, or the people leaving the suggestions took my OP far too literally and suggested games that simply have a couple of cookie cutter houses you can enter.

Looks like Im gonna have to keep chasing that dragon. Thanks to everyone for trying and feel free to leave more suggestions though.

Bro, you aren't some special snowflake that understands the true appeal of Shenmue that nobody else can grasp. We know they aren't exactly the same but try to give suggestions to games with at least some similarities.
But since I am so nice, I will actually give you the best possible thing to perfectly match your following description
>focused on exploring a detailed world, entering random shops and buildings for no other reason than to just look around and talk to people

Not an adventure game per se, but Sleeping Dogs really scratched the itch for playing a game in Hong Kong. Like Shenmue 2 you could tell the devs paid attention to how it's a mixture of newer British and old world Chink architecture.

David Bowie wasn't real, he was an actor(and probably created by the CIA) like Tony Clifton, Pee Wee Herman, Jim Morrison, the current Paul McCartney. They're not real people, just characters.
