If you're relying on PS2 Classics injection it's very hit-or-miss.

Hacked Slims will play most of the PS2 library, and unlike Fats, they won't get YLOD after a week.

"Very" is not a word that should be used by people who don't even bother to read shit before giving tech support. If 83% runs without any issue and an additional 13% exhibit only minor issues, I struggle to call that "very hit-or-miss".

Whatever, I have no reason to try this when I've got four models with PS2 BC functionality (1 A, 2 Bs, and 1 E).

you can get a pa2 in good condition for like $70 shipped on ebay, and PCSX2 is excellent now even on a potato PC. why the fuck would you ever want to play PS2 games on the nogaemz machine?

This. It's not worth it using a fucking PS3 with native resolution and some weird smoothing filter.
PS2 games that run at 240p, ICO, Star Ocean 1,2 will not run at all because of some weird restrictions in the HDMI protocol.

In my experience it's alright. You get, like, 5-10% less performance in general and some games have graphica glitches but most of them work just fine. Check the compatibility list on psdev wiki and use configs from aldos(?) website. Playing ZOE2 (american) and fighting the boss in the tunnel at half the speed was an experience.

The PS3 hooks up to a CRT TV, so it is totally worth it for 480i/480p games.

It's not that worth it when the Slim uses software emulation that's far inferior to the PCSX2, and the original model uses partial emulation that again is inferior. Either use real hardware or just emulate on PC. PS3 is only if you don't have access to either of those.

If your use case is a CRT TV then you will not be served by PCSX2.
>PS3 is only if you don't have access to (a PS2)
PS3's are cheaper upfront AND in the long run since you don't need to buy memory cards, network adaptors, etc

HDMI to analog adaptors from Amazon are all shit never mind that most CRT televisions had neither ypbpr nor VGA inputs

>So how good are these things for playing PS2 games?
The early bc fat model got a ee+gs ic straight out of a scph-7700x. Yes, you're basically buying 2 consoles in 1 package. But the ps2 games that require a hdd won't work.
Good luck finding one in good working condition though. Even frankensteined motherboards are starting to deteriorate lately, plenty cases of nops2_menu black screen error.

>i heard even the slims play many games fine.
Since the slims don't have the ic, they use ps2_softemu (the emulator for ps2 classic) which is basically just a port of an outdated pcsx2 build for ps3.
Tekken tag tournament runs slow on it so your mileage may vary.

Wrong; PS2 Classics use ps2_netemu.

Absolute insanity with no documentation to corroborate this.

Will it ever be integrated into /vr/ or will we make a new board?

Rather then their own board I think they'll just never be allowed on an arbitrary basis.
I thought allowing 6th gen was dubious when it was done since popular 6th gen games still got regular /v/ threads at the time, but it would make sense to have some non-arbitrary consistent rules based on years passed even if they pissed people off a bit.
IMO it would be reasonable to now allow only the first year or two of games for 7th gen consoles because they were stylistically much like games from the 6th gen and older and like PC games that are allowed.
I am curious whether allowing 7th gen would immediately ruin the board or if it would start discussion of niche 7th gen games that doesn't happen on /v/.
If it happened there would need to be a specific rule against discussing last-gen ports of games made primarily for the subsequent gen of consoles. This should already be a rule with the gens we have but isn't for some reason. Most posts are in good faith so I guess it doesn't matter that much.
What if we binned everything generation-based and just said games 20 years or older were allowed? Would that work?

for that to work you need to install the ps2 system data from psn.

Kind of true. I mean PS3 era was when Japan stopped being the leader of the console market and the west took over, so there are a lot less cool games than on ps2.

>Early PS3 fats
They play PS2 games nearly perfect since they're natively backwards compatible, but unfortunately they have components prone to failure and even if you find a working one you'll need to do some soldering work on it sooner or later to keep it working and avoid/resolve the YLoD.
>Later Fats/Early Slims
It is possible to rip PS2 discs to the hard drive and use the native emulator to play games through Multiman or Webman on CFW and it works well for the most part but some games just don't work or have serious issues.
>Later Slims/Superslims
You can technically also play PS2 games from these using HEN but not only do you have to rip the discs you also have to install the emulator manually along with a compatibility list, name your isos accordingly to include the SLUS code, and on top of that use a separate tool like Apollo to encrypt the iso before you can play it from Multiman or Webman, so it's doable but such a pain in the ass you would probably be better off just using PCSX2.
