It's perfectly fine to like 3SE or 5 more. But I'm so bored of all the zoomers who think DMC1 is bad because it doesn't have a million different combo strings and weapons. It did a staggering amount to shape the 3D action genre in 2001 and even if we disregard how influential it was it's still a damn good game. 3 onward continued to refine the combat system but the quality of bosses, enemies, setting and atmosphere all declined after Kamiya left. 3SE is a great game but there are so many bad bosses and Dante's animations feel so weightless as whack away at the sandbag enemies. DMC1 has the most OOMPH and they were wrong to abandon its horror atmosphere.

I swear people just get frustrated at Phantom then quit immediately after that and write it off as unpolished jank.

Most likely mismanaged. Keep in mind Itsuno mentioned he came into DMC2 8 months after development had started, and they had to hurry and get everything done within 4-6 months of total crunch to even get it into playable status. It's a miracle it even plays without issue from beginning, middle and end without crashing.
