The middle child of Contra games. People talk about the original Contra or shitpost about Contra 3 vs Hard Corps, or post about how much Contra Force sucks. But Super C is always forgotten.
โ1988 saw many sequels and prequels in video games, such as Dragon Quest III, Super Contra, Mega Man 2, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, and Super Mario Bros. 3, along with new titles such as Assault, Altered Beast, Capcom Bowling, Ninja Gaiden, RoboCop, Winning Run and Chase H.Q.โ
I had Contra and Super C I passed up on until like 95 when I got it used. I chose Robocop instead because I saw the movie and it was different and SuperC looked to similar to the first one. Mega man 2, double dragon 2 and super Mario brothers 3 were all better more meaningful sequels than Super C.
Ninja Gaiden came out.
Because it wasnโt a major improvement, and lacked any media helping Contra characters stay relevant, it was overshadowed and forgotten. Mega man was in the cartoon, Super Mario was the most hyped game at the time, had news coverage. Double dragon was a huge hit.
The name โsuper Cโ made it too unclear it was contra and hurt brand recognition.
No new innovation was there to justify it over other games coming out that were pushing forward. Take a look at that 1988 list of games and it explains the situation.
It's more Contra, but I liked that there weren't any hallway stages and found the overhead ones better, even if they weren't preferable to the side scrolling stages.
great game with an awesome first level. i love the aesthetics so much
>>11887426 (OP)Super c was the one my grandparents had in their basement. It remains me and my cousins favorite for this reason. Good job OP
>>11887426 (OP)>always forgotten.More like lumped together with the previous game.
>>11887426 (OP)It's not as good as the original. The difficulty curve is flawed, it peaks halfway through and then gets progressively easier.
>>11887907I don't know. The final overhead stage can be pretty tricky if you don't have a weapon. It's likely to happen because getting through the appearing floor mouths is a crapshoot.
>>11887426 (OP)It's better than Contra. The overhead levels are more fun than the behind-the-back shit.
>>11887426 (OP)I loved it, probably my second favorite Contra behind Hard Corps. The top-down levels are definitely the best implementation of the gimmick levels
Contra, Super C and Contra III is one of the best streaks in gaming history
>>11887426 (OP)Super C is just too close to the original Contra. It changed the flame weapon, it ditched corridor levels in favor of top-down view, but for most of the game it might as well be a level pack for Contra. That in itself isn't a bad thing, because Contra is awesome, but the game just doesn't have a distinct identity like Contra 3, Hard Corps and Contra Force all do.
>>11887426 (OP)I always called that one "Super Contra"
The top down levels suck compared to other top down shooters even at the time, the game felt like a cut down version of the arcade, which wasn't great to begin with. They should have developed their own Contra NES sequel instead of trying to port Super Contra.
The way they tried to clean up the music is awful and the jungle level is some of the laziest shit in the series.
>>11892261That's the arcade version, they probably had to rename the NES release because of the Iran-Contra shit going on at the time.
>>11892261Hey buddy, shut it down, it's Super C ok
>>11887907pretty much this, it's a good game, and the slopes make it interesting, but the original nes game was better.
>>11887426 (OP)feels the same with ninja gaiden 2
I love Super C, and also enjoy Legacy of War. The top down levels are fun
I like Super C. I feel it is an improvement over the first game. I've beaten it, but I found the overhead stage where enemies just pop out of the sand to be random. There's probably a consistent way to not die there though.
>>11888417It's that hallway part that comes afterwards that usually fucks me up. I've beaten the game with 0 deaths, but that part is always hard to get through without spread or fire.
