It was one of those early games that put a great impression on me, like Toshinden. I still love those games as I did with Gunners' Heaven and Panzer Bandit forming my early Playstation memories, pushing the console into my top 10 most favorite non-PC/handheld gaming device. It may be simplistic by modern day standards for fighting games, but maybe it was at a time when there wasn't as munch variety in titles as today. The visuals were pretty appealing to my friends and I, so showing it off at our bi-weekly gatherings was still a good experience for all. Maybe in the party context along with its new/exciting nature suits it best.
