How important and influential were gaming events like E3 and the Video Game Awards during the retro era? Were many passionate gamers eagerly anticipating each event, similar to today?

Good question. In the early days I wasn't aware enough to anticipate it, but I would pour over the magazine specials about it (and TGS) afterwards. Then with the Halo 2 demo, that's what made me start anticipating it and streaming it or watching it on G4.

I remember reading about Las Vegas' CES from vidya magazines in the early 90s. Usually had lots of new game previews.

I never knew when it was actually on or anything, but I always enjoyed watching a shitload of trailers on the DVDs that came with game magazines after E3.

Late 90 early 2000 E3 was mostly a journalist thing

The golden age of E3 was late 2000 early 2010

Not at all. E3 didn't even exist for most of "the retro era" "the Video Game Awards" certainly didn't.

CES was pretty good. I went to almost every one from mid 80's to mid 90's,
