Games should be gameplay

Stupid. Script can be conveyed via an FMV or a textbox or in some other way. The choice of whether to use FMV doesn't have much to do with the quality of the script.

Not stupid, and correct. But perfection is impractical so cutscenes are a good thing despite that they represent a failure, as long as they aren't too clumsy or lengthy or poorly written or otherwise harmful.

cutscenes were a big part of the success of games like FF7 and they can be very memorable. also can be seen as a reward, which is inherent to game design

explain how your gif is good and an FMV is bad

Oh hey, it's that SNES game where they added FMVs to the PS1 port.

NTA but you actively control someone who is intelligent to realize that following her heart to save a loved one will likely create a temporal paradox, possibly undoing everything the party has been striving to do. You actively make that decision through her as a proxy. Shit like this and Celes killing Cid added a lot of impact to those moments because they are effectively a form of gameplay with consequences. You don't get that staring at a rendered FMV showing off how well a background is rendered.

You dont control the character during this gif you are watching the characters talk, just like a cutscene, then you control your character.

This argument wont continue until you answer both A. do you consider a FMV the same as game-rendered characters performing normal animations and speaking with talk bubbles, neither examples you control other than advancing text, both examples of cutscenes. and B. Is the point of this thread, or in your specific case the point of your reply, that a cutscene (defined in the previous question) is bad for script writing/storytelling but events where you are in control of your character and witnessing events happen to you good?

OP was referring to the scene itself, not the gif. FMVs specifically moved away from this style of storytelling as it became a limitation in how they worked. Continue your argument up your ass.

I hate how awkwardly implemented they are. You watch the whole scene play out with sprites, then it loads for a bit, then you see an anime version of that exact same scene, then it loads for a bit, and you go back to the game. I like the scenes themselves, but they just don't properly integrate into the game.

Pretty much this. Cutscenes are perfectly good for storytelling, as long as they're well integrated into the game (as they are in CT). Switching to an animation tends to be cumbersome.

I wasn't impressed or interested the first time you said this and I'm still not impressed or interested now.

Your imagination is a failure of the metaphysical capability of aethereal creation through the subconscious, not even thinking of things you automatically create.

I don't think I can handle the autism here anymore. The amount of severe nitpicking I've seen over universally praised games is just mindnumbing. It makes you see red and want to smash their heads in a drawer.

I hate people like you. I also hate people who abuse cutscenes. The idea that "less is more" when involving cinematic-ness in game design is always applicable, but the idea that "none is more" is absolutely retarded.

I'd amend this to say "MID-LEVEL cutscenes are a failure of game design". It's only when they interrupt gameplay that they're a problem. And even in between levels they should only be as long as they NEED to be and should still be skippable.
