Once they broke free of the exclusivity and/or restrictions from Nintendo, they first tested the waters with B-team ports of SFC games to MD/Genesis. It is hard to deny the large audience of Sony consoles, but they really seemed to put more effort in supporting other platforms which allowed for more freedoms that benefit their art. I think it was the Dreamcast which also brought SNK to go in with them too that made it the choice platform, as Capcom already influenced Sega's controller designs prior.
