Both those games are great, so I guess good things? Though I think overall the GameCube wasn't as good as the PS2, it's still hard for me to think of it as outright bad or even not great.

But I'm not the sort of person who has to compare every single thing and declare one shit and one good anyways.

I see where you're coming from and I get it. Ultimately if Nintendo wanted to sell units, they had to ride on the streak caused by OoT, which was only 3 years old by the time GC came out. Granted, while I feel WW was the proper choice, I tend to have to remember how edgy and "mature" many games had to be in order to sell well in the early-mid 2000's.
t. was 12 in 2001 and thought GTA3 was the hottest shit.

Mario Sunshine feels like they just legitimately ran out of ideas, so they slapped a gimmick on the game.
It also feels like it was a product of corporate office culture where the only thing anyone looks forward to is their vacation, so they based the entire game at a vacation resort.

NTA but the edginess was forced top down by publishers. The CEO for Insomniac talked about it in an interview for why they killed Spyro for Ratchet and Clank. They thought if they could capture the older teenagers that they would get their younger siblings too. There wasn't anything natural about it at all.

OOT wasn't that edgy or mature IMO. It was pretty par for the course that kids adventure movies had really dark moments. The direction WW went in was just completely out of left field.

>NTA but the edginess was forced top down by publishers.
Because that's what was popular in society as a whole.
>There wasn't anything natural about it at all.
Except that is natural. Younger kids look up to their older siblings. I say that as a young sibling to my older brother in the 90s. Anyone with an older sibling always looked up to their older brother or wanted to do the things they were doing. I can't recall how many times I snuck into my brothers room just to play his collection of SNES/PS1 games or would show off his holographic marvel cards to friends
>OOT wasn't that edgy or mature IMO.
Never implied that. I was talking about the industry or rather just the mindset kids had. I remember buying Animal Crossing. That was a game you made damn sure not to tell anyone you played back then. Ever.

I was conflicted even back then over the direction on Zelda. On one hand, they really had struck gold with the tone of OoT and MM for the franchise and I wish we had gotten another game like that from the same head director. TP kinda felt alright, but I dont think it really captured the same tone and was more like copying someone elses handiwork by eye. On the other hand, I do think Wind Waker and its living cartoon style, does also work, but they didnt do enough with it. Maybe it should have just been another IP entirely so that it wasnt competing against the other entries in its own franchise? I kinda wonder if it could have been rebranded as a StarTropics game where you are sailing around and discovering islands to explore.

You and literally everyone else. Unfortunately they took Koizumi off Zelda and put him on Mario and that left Zelda with Aonuma, who just didn't even like Zelda. They also lost a few other key people and the Zelda teams overall were not seasoned veterans anymore. You can see a lot of respect for the western influence of Zelda in OoT and MM, but once Aonuna got his hands on it, he immediately cut out all western influence that he was able to and injected as much Japanese as he could. Kind of strange, to be honest. Nintendo sent the dev team to Germany for inspiration during the development of OoT. Then they pivot hard away from that on WW. The "end of Hyrule" in WW was symbolic not just in-game, but where the series would go from there and I think it's interesting the IP almost went under because of it. Aonuma had to backpedal and basically became everyone's bitch to save the IP from getting shut down on top of Shiggy pulling strings to get TP as a launch title for the Wii. Absolute shit show. Zelda was a huge hit with the west. They really should have put someone in charge of it who would have maintained a respect for its roots in western culture and history.

Honestly, my problem with Sunshine was scaling back most of Mario's capabilities from what Smash and SM64 already established. Mario should be allowed to punch, kick, and baseball slide through his problems at all times.

You say that but Nintendo has been bulldozing the rest of the game industry with goofy games. The top 3 most popular games today are Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite. GTA comes in 4th but is an outlier. Stardew Valley is the highest rated game on Steam followed by Portal 2 and Terraria. It is so easily provably false, yet everyone seems to be convinced people want serious mature games. Even if it means getting their studio shut down, which is happening in record numbers today. All for serious mature slop.

>TP kinda felt alright, but I dont think it really captured the same tone and was more like copying someone elses handiwork by eye.
TP felt like it just had less range of tone than OOT or MM did. OOT and MM got darker but there were also bright and colorful areas. TP was kinda bleh for most of the game.

Rare was pulling off technical feats with their own hardware that they themselves couldn't figure out. The Gooch would criticize his own nip peons and ask why they were not able to do the stuff the bongs were. Miyamutoid had a personal rivalry with them and even delayed OoT after testing out Banjo. Retro were little cock suckers in comparison that just did as they were told.

>It just needed more dungeons
They had huge plans for it, but they put them in TP instead. I think the habit of releasing unfinished games to meet deadlines in a competitive environment was a relic of the 2D era where games were generally easier to make and tech was evolving much more quickly. Everything slowed down so much once 3D took hold. Shiggy's comments about meeting deadlines confirms as much.
