Prince of Persia (1989)
This game aged like the finest wine. How come I never see /vr/ talking about it?

Because you’re playing the wrong version

Sorry, but if your prince didn't wear a white pajama onesie, you didn't beat the game.

Super cool at a glimpse. Pretty damn tedious when you try to beat the whole game

It’s a lot of platforming and a pretty hard game to finish in one sitting. Its so good though, the game gives you password warps and if need be, savestates

DOS and Apple Mac look the best.

I finally beat it a year or two ago. I enjoyed it, but never again. I can see people super into that kind of gameplay beating it over and over, though.

Seeing Apple // version in action is insane. It is very fast and fluid, running on a computer platform from 1977 which got almost no upgrades since, except for an enormous (128K) amount of RAM.

in the original Apple II and in the DOS version you can just save your game at the start of a new level (after level 3). It's Ctrl-G to save and Ctrl-L (at the title screen) to load

I love the Apple II version. The foot step sound effect when playing is really satisfying for some reason.

It's a wonderful game and a really good introduction into cinematic platformers once you get over the initial learning curve of the controls. Some things to remember for new players:

>Press jump about a tile or so before the one you want to jump on.
>Prince can knock loose tiles out of the ceiling in certain spots.
>Some jumps can only be made by grabbing a ledge with the action button.
>Prince will very generously snap to ledges above him, sometimes to a detrimental degree because it doesn't seem possible at first.
>You can swap positions with guards and get them into situations where they're pushed off ledges or into traps.
>You can tiptoe through ground spikes and also tiptoe through guillotines. The latter is faster and more precise for getting through them than jumping. Hold action while walking and Prince will tiptoe as far as he can to them without getting hurt.
>Prince can crouch and also crouch hop under closing doors.
>Pulling yourself up from a ledge and through a closing door has extremely generous collision detection.

Lots of nice little tricks like that to figure out. For first timers I highly recommend SDLPoP, which is a decomp port of the DOS/Amiga version. The DOS/Amiga version is by far my favourite since it refines a lot of the rough edges of the Apple II original.

The SNES port is like a sequel and remake rolled into one. Great graphics and sound and lots for fans to enjoy but its also a little bloated. PoP1 is a very demanding game and I think the SNES version goes on too long and makes some of the levels too large. Still worth playing, but only after you've beaten the Jordan Mechner original.

Thanks, I think I beat it without knowing about the tiptoe trick or crouch hops.

the only downside to the mac version is that the game speed is slightly slower overall

The pc-98 version is actually pretty good and close to the original if you turn up the the speed setting a notch.

it is, but unlike modern movie games you have to rehearse to get the scenes right

This style of game is often described as 'cinematic platformers' because of the rotoscoped animations, but it is definitely not a movie game. You're not going to spend much time watching cutscenes with Prince of Persia.

The fight with the skeleton and the mirror that creates a magical clone of yourself when you run through it are honestly some of the most kino events I've ever seen in video games. They are not cutscenes but they feel just as epic.

GG/SMS Aladdin is weird
It starts with some technically impressive pseudo 3D effects and shit in the running stage at the beginning, so you think the whole game will have impressive shit, then it's just a meh platformer with nothing special except decent graphics I guess

I can't believe this game has an active modding community.

It wasn't a problem to begin with since they added more time to the countdown to account for the extra length

Also if you've been dicking around in a level for too long you just go back to the main menu and re-use the most recent password to go back to the beginning of the level with the time you had when you first got there. You can try before you buy, so to speak

Take the twitter speak elsewhere, zoomie. I really couldn't give a fuck if I got "ratio'd" or not in an online discussion. Your generation is so obsessed with little numbers on a screen like its an almighty truthsayer.

>>11891976
You don't have to tiptoe or jump guillotines you can just run through them. Only spikes will kill you if you run.

True on the other hand it is one of the earliest games with actual cinematic cutscenes.

DOS PoP was the first video game I ever played at 6-7, and those parts blew my mind along with lowering your sword and running through the mirror man on the final stage. Especially with no guides, no help, nothing.

The SNES version is pretty cool even for someone who's already played the original.
Only the final level is kinda evil

It looks cool however I feel like it lost some of its soul by adding all those fantasy elements to the design.

Good list but you forgot:
>if you knock lose a tile above you, crouch and stand up the Prince won't be hurt by the falling tile
>you can run over spikes without dying by pressing and releasing a direction key instead of keeping it pressed
>tiptoeing allows to sneak past guards so they won't turn around to follow you
