Post games where the tutorial levels outstay their welcome. I'm lookin' at you TP
>>11891969 (OP)add cockarina of slime to the list, Oh Pee
>>11892047Come on Oblivion is nothing compared to TP and DQ7
>>11891969 (OP)Your favorite game: tutorial level
My favorite game: good pacing
>>11891969 (OP)It's not bad at all the first time you play and on replays you should already have a save that you kept right after the tutorial
>>11891969 (OP)TP intro is the beginning of an epic story, and filters autistic husks so that people with soul know not to associate with them
>>11891970You can finish OoT's tutorial in like 5 seconds. All you need to do is beeline to the sword and get 40 bucks for the shield and you're thrown into a dungeon right away.
>>11893015Nobody is filtered by TP's tutorial. It's fine the first time but it's boring on repeat playthroughs. If you're replaying a game then you're not being filtered by it.
>>11891969 (OP)Mario Galaxy not only was all tutorials there's a DVD of tutorials. Shit games
>>11893019>it's boring on repeat playthroughsIf you're replaying it that often, make a save file like that anon suggested
>>11893026>You're free to run though it at your own pace and you're never stopped by anything to have to listen to how do basic stuff. YoI don't agree with you. If there's any tutorialing going on then it's done in a hands off, just figure it out yourself way. Which isn't what people dislike about tutorials like TP.
>>11893030But then you miss all the tone build up that TP has in the intro. I'm not saying it's bad, game is very good overall, but it does have an annoyingly long tutorial. And it's even worse if I go with what the guy trying to shit on OOT considers a tutorial because that makes all of Hyrule one and the first dungeon one as well.
>>11893031>just figure it out yourself way.Oh you're "figuring it out" on replays huh
>>11893036>But then you miss all the tone build upYes, you don't get that with a short intro
Nevermind that TP first hours have more varied gameplay than OoT
You're free to prefer whichever, I'm just tired of these nonsensical attempts at rationalizing it
>>11893031yeah, because navi never talks about how to do anything in that game... oops.
oot doesn't release your hand until castle town.
>>11892995>on replays you should already have a save that you kept right after the tutorialYep. That's how I play my games. Expecting them to be shit, so I prepare for the worst.
>>11893026Explain how Deku Tree is a tutorial. It's like every other dungeon you enter. Can't wait to hear this.
>>11893106Learning the basics in a simple and controlled environment. Maybe the greatest trick it pulled was fooling kids and tards like you into thinking the big boy pants are on already.
We all can agree that jumping on the web was a great way to hammer home that "this ain't 2D, you gotta think vertical now". I still remember when I did it as a kid.
>>11893141>We all can agree that jumping on the web was a great way to hammer home that "this ain't 2D, you gotta think vertical now". I still remember when I did it as a kid.It worked well if it was your first time playing a 3D game, I had already completed Tomb Raider at this point.
According to that guy, anything that teaches you a new concept or mechanic is a tutorial level. Like nigga, thats just good game design.
>>11893145True, true. 2D sidescrollers had verticality too, I'm just thinking from the perspective of going from LTTP to OoT
>>11893151Don't let my being unphased deter your praise. The first half is a good dungeon, everything below the web is kinda whatever but central puzzles like that which present themselves as innocuous tickle the brain in a special way. Snowhead in majora is another good one.
>>11891970What the fuck is cockarina of slime?
Take your meds
>>11893156>The first half is a good dungeon, everything below the web is kinda whateverFrom what I remember, it goes over climbing, jumping, lighting sconces, aiming, pushing blocks, diving. It's not terribly exciting for returning players, but it's important to make sure new players have a grasp the basics. Then they're let loose.
>>11893158>What the fuck is cockarina of slime?it's the instrument you've been blowing on, all shined up with your throat spit. itadakimasu, anon.
>>11891969 (OP)I don't remember the cover looking so blue. I like it.
>>11893071I don't recall navi forcefully making you listen to her after that point. It's just an optional thing.
>>11893410That owl comes in to guide you along with navi
>>11893438You mean that tiny scene that takes five seconds? That's comparable to the multi hour tutorial in TP to you?
I really don't get how your brain works.
>>11892047>OblivionIt's like 20 minutes long if you're not a retard
>>11893410navi interrupts you relentlessly in the gay deku tree. for the first timer new to 3d it may make sense, but she really tells you the most basic shit like "press a to open doors" or "hold a to push that block" or "press a dive in the water, maybe you'll find something"
You only need to play Oblivion's once. Once you have a save file at the end, you can recreate your character to be whatever before leaving when you replay the game.
>>11892990Wind Waker is a tutorial from start to finish and never lets the player think for themself.
>>11893141You could argue pretty most retro games are a tutorial with that definition.
>>11891969 (OP)TP is fucking flawless and I will kill you for criticizing it
>>11894182>You could argue pretty most retro games are a tutorial with that definition. Are a tutorial or have a tutorial?
You can look at something like Castlevania on NES and how it neatly introduces the gameplay. Want to get a hang on whipping? Here's respawning zombies.
Of course if the game has simple unchanging gameplay/controls, it's taken care of in a few screens. Press A and B to jump n shoot.
>>11894536>Are a tutorial or have a tutorial?Did I stutter? Your definition (which is wrong). Not mine. A tutorial requires explanations and discourse. You could argue the times that Navi stops you to talk to you about a mechanic are tutorials, yet they are separate, short and concise and do not overstay their welcome. To call the entire Deku Tree dungeon (or to extend that to a later portion of the game) a tutorial is simply inaccurate.
>>11894584>A tutorial requires explanations and discourseA tutor doesn't need to pipe up like navi if the student can manage the exercise on their own.
I get it, you don't like to think your precious game has ugh a tutoooorial, but let's not pretend video games can't do tutorials without text boxes.
>>11894627>let's not pretend video games can't do tutorials without text boxes.Anon. A tutorial requires text boxes (or spoken word) by definition.
>>11894649Okay. Deku tree hands you the tutorial with a text box where you're led through the basics accompanied by a tutor with more text boxes.
>>11894185I remember JSRF being a pain in the ass
>game has no tutorial level
>you either beat chapter 1 or you dont

>>11891969 (OP)Pretty much every game. Tutorials are modern babyslop dev theory, especially the ones that teach you absolutely retarded shit like how to jump. Have your little tutorial room be a separate option in the game’s menu.
>>11894663>Deku tree hands you the tutorialHow are you this stupid, anon? He gives you your mission.
>>11894961Hmm so it isn't a tutorial if it's presented as something else..
I've gotta be honest, I never beat TP, but not because of the tutorial. I spent my ~40 hours of gametime trying to overlook its flaws, because there were things I legitimately liked about it. But then came the fight against Zelda. There is a lot of ugly, retarded shit in TP, but this is the part that broke me. You see this bitch like two times for 30 seconds in the whole game, and then she disappears. For no reason at all, she randomly shows back up right at the end, except she's being controlled bt Ganondorf, and she proceeds to have another energy ball tennis match with you just like the penultimate battle in OoT. It was right then and there that I realized the game couldn't be saved. Nothing about it was endearing enough to overcome a battle against a princess making male Ganondorf grunts when you hit her while having a 1:1 repeat fight from a better game that came out 8 years prior. That was it for me. It was the corn on the top of the turd mound. It was so gay and lazy that I simply could not take it any longer. I turned the console off right there and sold my copy the following day towards buying F-Zero GX and Timesplitters Future Perfect. Best decision I ever made.
>>11894980>it isn't a tutorial if it's something elseYep. Now you're getting it.
>>11895254Ok, so TP doesn't have a tutorial, it's a day in the life of Link being a valued member of a cozy community and a protective "big brother" to the children, before his village is attacked and Link is dragged into the twilight realm and turned into a wolf and meets Midna in a dungeon and meets Zelda and then returns to his village but his friends treat him as a monster....
And THEN Link has to sacrifice his former life and set out to save the children and the world
