Why wasn’t Winston playable in this?

1 was fast but weak
1 was slow but strong
And 1 was balanced
Only thing that makes sense is for Winston to be strong and fast since he's black. Should've been unlockable or something

Seriously, go back and watch Ghostbusters. Winston only appears halfway through, he's in FOUR scenes. He has minimal lines, didn't even make it on the cover. Even in 2 when he's already part of the team he doesnt get to be there for the first sewer scene or courtroom scene. Wtf

All of his lines are iconic
>If there's a steady paycheck involved, I'll believe anything you say
>Tell him about the twinkie
>I love Jesus' style
>I have seen shit that will turn you WHITE
>If someone asks if you're a god you say YES
>I LOVE THIS TOWN

Pretty much the entire script Ernie Hudson got right here

If IIRC, the role was originally written with Eddie Murphy in mind, who was both a comedian and rising star at the time. Murphy passed on it and was busy filming "Beverly Hills Cop" anyway. After that, Winston's role was cut back significantly.
It might have been interesting to see Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Eddie Murphy all playing off each other. Probably something like pic related.

In retrospect I'm glad Murphy didn't get it. He would have dominated each since because he's high energy. Same for John Candy who was originally planned for being Louis. I love him, but I can't see anyone but Rick Moranis playing that part.

Count how far down Ernie Hudson was in the casting list...

https://youtu.be/90SRrWfmY88?t=30

1. Bill Murray (top billing)
2. Dan Aykroyd (also writer)
3. Sigourney Weaver (top female co star)
4. Harold Ramis
5. Rick Moranis
6. Annie Potts
7. William Atherson (Walter Peck)
8. Ernie Hudson

Earnie Hudson was not high enough in the casting list to be included in any of the merchandise or posters for the first movie. Ernie Hudson was not a big name or a new actor when he was filming the first movie. Eddie Murphy would have gotten a much bigger role, possibly 3rd to 4th billing. The cartoon is a different property based on the movie. Ghostbusters 2, Earnie Hudson was bumped up the casting list to main cast.

I mean he doesn't even appear in the first place until 2/3 of the way through the film and he's not a scientist. He's just a guy who's willing to zap ghosts with an unlicensed particle accelerator. Like, Winston is great, but if you're exclusively looking at the first movie he's a minor character. His role was greatly expanded in the second film and the tv show because he was actually there the whole time. It's weird that he's not in the game at all, but him not being one of the major characters is fair because he's simply not on the same footing as the other busters until later.

My guess is Murphy wanted top billing to push his stardom, and bailed for Beverly Hills Cop. Where he was the title star. Ernie Hudson was chosen because he was a lesser known actor. It made him feel like someone who was pulled off the street corner. he was outside of the circle of Venkman, Stance and Spengler. The way his character casually becomes part of the crew is great. Underplayed. Not a well known actor prior to the release of the movie. It wasn't a debut role for him either. Did not appear on the poster, because he was eighth down on the casting list. In Ghostbusters II he still one spot lower than Rick Moranis on the casting list (Louis Tully did get a lot of scenes), but still had enough clout to be on the movie poster and in games. Winston is also the first Ghostbuster seen in the sequel.

According to Dan Aykroyd, one of the earliest script ideas was that Winston Zeddemore was going to be a retried military drill sergeant who was looking for a job. Over the course of the movie, he would put the other Ghostbusters through their own version of boot camp to put them into shape. That script idea sounded too much like the movie Stripes. Turning Winston into an 'every man' changed the tone of the movie.

There were so many script re-writes from the first Ghostbusters between like 1981 - 1984 that I think it was an early rough draft idea. I swear it was an actual idea being thrown around when John Belush was penned to play Peter Venkman. That concept always sounded too much like Stripes, which stared Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, and directed by Reitman.

Unrelated but when Stanley Kubrick was filming Full Metal Jacket, originally the role of Sgt Hartman was gonna be for Tim Colchery but came out as too campy and comedic, then R.Lee Ermey who was just an assistant at the time asked to test for the role and it just so happened he was a Sargent before in real life.
