The GBA added the ability to stream raw audio instead of relying on the limitations of the GB's sound chip. It allows for more complex sounds, like voice clips and instrument samples. It's hard to imagine now since the GBA's "sound chip" is considered a joke, but back in the day it was a technical advancement.
Mario Advance 1 was a tech demo for the GBA, and it was one of its features they wanted to show off.

That's extremely fair, I guess it helps that particular version of Mario Bros has more content than the minigame from SMB3.

That's extremely fascinating, because IIRC, didn't the GBA have to stream audio entirely off its ARM CPU, which had to be used for game logic too? I can see why Nintendo felt proud.

Yes, that's why the audio quality needs to be really low and it sounds like shit. The GBA could sound fantastic in theory, but then you wouldn't have any processing power for the rest of the game.

>Remake super Mario Bros 2 on snes
>Port that game to GBA with voice overs
>Create roms of those ported remakes with the voices removed

I know the game isn't exactly 1:1 but are the differences really worth patching roms rather than just playing the original? Which had a larger screen anyways. The zoomed in aspect ratio gives me a fucking headache

Zoomer here, I played SMB3 and SMB2 on these ports first and they actually ruined those games for me because of the graphics and voice lines.
I played SMW and SMB on SNES/NES so I liked those way more.

To this day I think of this shitty port when I think of SMB2 and JUST WHAT I NEEDED!!!!!!!! WOOOAAAHHH Toad sounds

Now you have all of these zooming morons from /v/ shitting up my board from what I presume to be third world degenerates from Algermexistan who grew up with the PS2 as their first console. 6th gen will never be retro to me. Dreamcast should always be the cut off point.

>Dreamcast
should have never been allowed to begin with, like it was at the beginning but the mods relented after late 90s toddlers bitched that they didn't know what SNES and SMD were because Dreamcast was their first console Mummy and Daddy bought them for their 5th birthdays. And you give these cunts an inch and they take a mile. First lying and saying remakes on modern consoles were always allowed (they weren't) then bitching that /vr/ is too stagnant because no new games come out for old consoles (literally the fucking point, retard) and finally that PS2 was 20+ years so it should be included. No. Fuck you.

Half of your childhood games will be or are already lost media because you bought in onto multiplayer only games. Not to mention, the last PS2 game was officially released post 2010s. That should be grounds for being modern in my book. Just admit it, the quality of this board is down the drain because of next gen newfags.

Those were also ports. Remasters, more accurately. They all use the original code from their NES titles, and the proof is in things like SMB3 having two debugging routines, one from it's original NES incarnation and a new one added to the the SNES version.
