DK is Cranky's son. Cranky is the original DK from the arcade game. In DK Jr, Jr is saving his dad, the original DK. It just makes sense.

Rare tried to retcon it in DK64 but literally noone except Illumination accepted the retcon and games mostly stuck with Cranky being DK's grandfather.

Cranky = original DK
Jr. = Cranky's son
DKC DK = Cranky's grandson
While Jr isn't referenced, the manual for DKC explicitly states that Cranky is DKC DK's grandfather, which makes sense, since (assuming human years) he's portrayed as being in his eighties, while DK is supposed to be a relatively young whippersnapper, probably in his mid 20s or thereabouts. Wouldn't be normal for a guy Cranky's age to have a son in his twenties, more likely his son would be in his 40s to 50s.
I'm actually kinda surprised that they didn't have Jr show up in the DKC games, would've been funny to see how they'd handle that.

Mild (not-retro) spoilers: the latest game implies that DK is in his teens. They seemingly aged him down, since that wasn't the impression I got in the older games.

I am fine with Cranky being the dad and DK the son, but I also think having Cranky as the grandfather, Junior the dad and DK the son also works. We do see a much bigger Junior in Mario Kart, as if he has grown up a bit. There is also the mystery ape running the golf kiosk in NES Open. If Rare had decided to make him a part of the DKC series, I always thought he should have had the role Wrinkly got. Instead of the grouch Cranky is, Junior is just a laid back dad who decided to retire from the video hero buisness early, and now he sits in his living room, reading the newspaper, giving moral support for his son and his friends, praising his efforts, saving your game, giving pearls of knowledge on game mechanics and advanced techniques. Just being all all around proud dad of his sons achievements, an anti Cranky. Maybe have his junior jump suit hung up in a corner and now refers to DK as Junior instead.

Bananza pretty much makes the whole thing vague now. Arcade DK is referenced as a fossil and they just call him "a certain ape from long ago" without confirming or denying him as Cranky.

They say "in the prime of his youth" or something, implying it's not a FOSSIL-fossil, and Cranky refers to "rivals in overalls" (there was a rumor that line was only in the demo but that's false, his ramblings are just random like in DKC1).
Other unexplained things in the game are throwing a wrench in the timeline though, but I -think- they may be doing that as a stepping stone towards a bigger reboot... or they're doing it just because they can and get a rise out of screwing with the fans.

No, the relationship was consistently grandparent/grandchild in the Country trilogy, they just suddenly changed it to parent/child in the 64 game because they wanted to cover the Junior hole and explain that he grew up.

to add to this, even if it was still rare, they were 2 different teams, one working on the DKC games and the other on DK64, which is why other than the characters from the first game everyone is a new kong, and why they have tiny instead of dixie.
They were just kinda doing their own thing, so they couldn't even be consistent after the first game.

That's why I always thought Jr was DK as a kid. DK to me seemed like Rare's redesign of that Jr specifically.

Diddy Kong was actually Rare's Junior redesign but Nintendo thought it was too drastic so they told them to rebrand the character as someone else entirely.

The new DK game made me wish we had a full 3D DK game on the GCN.
